Pertussis, or whooping cough, is easily spread through the air when a sick person sneezes, coughs or even talks. Common signs of pertussis include coughing fits (coughing many times in a row making it difficult to breathe), followed by a "whoop" sound. The cough becomes worse in the first one to two weeks; usually there is no fever.
Your child is eligible for this study because he or she attends a school where at least 2 other students have been diagnosed with pertussis.
Specimen Collection:
The swab of the back of your child's nose is called a nasopharyngeal swab. A nurse will insert a small thin sterile swab (smaller than a Q-tip) into the back part of your child's nose for 10 seconds and remove it. We will use this swab for culture and PCR testing. PCR is a new test that is used to find the bacteria from the nasal swab without having to grow the bacteria. We think this will be a better and more rapid test for pertussis.
For the blood specimen, a nurse will use a small needle to draw blood from a vein in your child's arm. We will draw 1 tube (10 ml or less than 1 tablespoon) of blood. This blood will be tested for antibody to pertussis, which may show recent infection.
Saliva is collected on a piece of paper, on a Q-tip like stick that you will hold on the inside of your child's mouth for up to two minutes. This saliva will be tested for antibody to pertussis.

Vamos examinar o sangue para a presença de anticorpos à coqueluche, que pode indicar se seu filho foi recentemente infectado.
A saliva é coletada por um bastão pequeno envolto em papel absorvente que você vai segurar e guardar dentro da boca do seu filho durante até dois minutos. A saliva também será examinada para verificar a presença de anticorpos à coqueluche.
