Screw roll
Before you set off exploring in your kayak, make sure you know how to roll out of a capsize. One technique is the screw roll.
1 If you roll over, wait until you’re upside down, then twist your body, lean forward, reach up, and put your paddle out of the water.
2 Roll your right wrist to make sure the right paddle blade is facing the water. Bring it down into the water in a sweep away from the front of the kayak towards the back.
3 The kayak will start to twist. Untwist your body so that you face forward, while still sweeping the paddle back.
4 When the paddle is pointing straight down, snap up your right hip.
5 Keep your head and body in the water until the last moment. When the boat rolls level they will come out of the water.
