Learning About Print (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1994, pp. 304-5), " . . .
training phonemic awareness produced little reading benefit unless children
were also taught the printed letters by which each phoneme was represented.
Functional understanding of the alphabetic principle depends equally on
knowlege of letters and one explicit awareness of the phonemes because it
depends integrally on the association between them . . . As crucial as
phonemic awareness is to the process of learning to read, it is also
difficult to acquire . . the tendency to attend to individual phonemes is
not triggered through mere exposure. Unless it is explictly taught, and it
can be, it seems to develp only with the successful acquisition of an
alphabetic script."

Słuch - tu w znaczeniu umiejętności wrodzonej. Jest to rodzaj wyczucia, do którego nie jest potrzebna żadna wiedza gramatyczna. Nie musisz wiedzieć co to jest fonem a mieć świetny słuch fonematyczny albo wiedzieć wszystko na temat fonemów, ale słuchu fonematycznego po prostu nie mieć.
