I still think we should use the word 'counteract' but maybe change the original phrase slightly so it is obvious that it relates to side effects caused by other drug or treatment. Therefore my new prop is : tablets prescribed to counteract side effects. Rather descriptive but it should convey the meaning of what the tablets are for and how they work. It is quite difficult to find a general term and saying that they are usually prescribed for such and such reason it is not good enough in my opinion as I could think of other examples this kind of tablets could be used for (kidneys, liver). 'Protective tablets' sounds awkward and straight away the question 'against what?' pops into your head. I hope this explains my reasoning behind the choice I made.
