I now think it may simply mean "pairwise comparison", but that would mean that "cruce" is being used to mean "comparison", which I find a bit strange. I tried googling "crossed pairwise comparison" but got no hits. I really just need confirmation from someone who knows more about statistics than I do. In fact, I've just sent the client an e-mail asking him to define it for me.

I think I've provided enough context already. What I'm looking for should be a standard term in statistical analysis. "These groups" refers to the groups being studied (Teachers in training versus teachers in service), which are split into types (TIPO). "Cruce" means cross and here it refers to a type of comparison (crosswise). All I'm looking for is someone who knows the standard term used in statistics, which, although not rocket science, is a speciality. Unless something more inspiring comes in, I'll probably use one of the two terms I suggested in my original query (pair crossing/crossed pairs), but it would be nice to have my stab at it confirmed by someone who actually knows the standard usage.

I don't think we have enough context to answer this. We don't know what "estos grupos", "tipo" and, most importantly, "cruces" means. "Por pares" is "in pairs".
