Source text - English Across the U.S., a tidal wave of citizens surged into school gymnasiums, town halls, church basements, county courthouses and countless other public places to cast ballots in a presidential election perceived as deeply historic across the political spectrum.
Hundreds of thousands of voters waited from long before daybreak on for hours on end to make their choices known.
The exact percentage of voters who cast ballots can’t be determined until final tabulations of all votes are completed. That will be days or weeks away, but nearly every indicator signalled that a historically high percentage of Americans participated.
Almost 45 million voters had already cast ballots before Tuesday in early voting. Nearly 95 million more were expected on Election Day. Michael McDonald, a politics professor at George Mason University, predicted nearly 65% of the electorate would have voted by the time all polls closed – matching or eclipsing the turnout in the presidential election of 1960 featuring candidates John. F. Kennedy y Richard Nixon. Not since 1908, when the U.S. was convulsing through a dramatic shift from the machine party politics of the 19th century to the wide-open melodrama of modern public campaigns have so large a proportion of Americans participated in a presidential election.
The motivations for those votes were writ large across the national landscape. Foremost, the milestone candidacy of Sen. Obama triggered a powerful desire to either participate in the election of the first African-American president or to stop his political agenda. But beyond the question of Sen. Obama was a belief shared across party lines that the country if off track.
“There’s a lot hanging on this election – the economy, the war, health care … the whole works,” said April Arellanes, a 22-year-old mother of three voting in Corona, N.M. She cast her ballot for Sen. McCain.
“I voted for Obama because I think we need a new direction,” said Dale Greiman, a 54-year-old casino dealer in Las Vegas who voted for George W. Bush in the 2000 election. “I just think Bush has lied to us about a lot of things.”

How odd then, to learn that McCain advisers have been treating their own vice presidential candidate like Valentino Barbie, dressing her up in fancy clothes and endlessly playing with her hair.
In 1991, with Americans fretting about a shaky economy, Poppy Bush visited a J. C. Penney and bought $28 worth of tube socks and a toddler’s sweat suit in a desperate effort to seem in touch with the common folk. Palin might have followed that example and popped into Penney’s to buy some new American-made duds. She is so naturally good-looking, there is no need to gild the Last Frontier lily.
Instead, with the economy cratering and the McCain campaign running on an “average Joe” theme, dunderheaded aides, led by the former Bushies Nicolle Wallace and Tracey Schmitt, costumed their Eliza Doolittle for a ball when she should have been dressing for a bailout.
The Republicans’ attempt to make the case that Barack Obama is hoity-toity and they’re hoi polloi has fallen under the sheer weight of the stunning numbers:
The McCains own 13 cars, eight homes and access to a corporate jet, and Cindy had her Marie Antoinette moment at the convention. Vanity Fair calculated that her outfit cost $300,000, with three-carat diamond earrings worth $280,000, an Oscar de la Renta dress valued at $3,000, a Chanel white ceramic watch clocking in at $4,500 and a four-strand pearl necklace worth between $11,000 and $25,000. While presenting herself as an I’m-just-like-you hockey mom frugal enough to put the Alaska state plane up for sale on eBay, Palin made her big speech at the convention wearing a $2,500 cream silk Valentino jacket that the McCain staff had gotten her at Saks.
At that point, Palin should have been savvy enough to tell those doing her makeover that she was a Wal-Mart mom. The sartorial upgrade was bound to turn into a strategy downgrade, as Palin pressed her case as a homespun gal who was ever so much more American than the elite, foreignish Obama, while she was gussied up in Italian couture.

Lo irónico del asunto es que son estos mismos asesores los que han estado tratando a su candidata a la vicepresidencia como a Barbie Valentino, vistiéndola con trajes elegantes y caros mientras juegan continuamente con su pelo.
En 1991, mientras los ciudadanos norteamericanos se agitaban por una economía que se tambaleaba, papaíto Bush invirtió la módica cantidad de 28 dólares en la adquisición de un par de medias deportivas y un chándal para niño pequeño en uno de los establecimientos de la multinacional J.C. Penney en un desesperado intento para fingir seguir en contacto con el pueblo. Palin debería haber seguido su ejemplo y haberse pasado por una de estas tiendas para adquirir cualquiera de los trapos made in America que distribuyen. Graduated in English Studies (BA) – Literature, Linguistics and Translation -, in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, last year spent studying abroad, in the University of Kent (Canterbury, UK). Apart from native Spanish, English language appears everywhere in my daily routines (reading, writing, watching films and TV shows,…), most of the jobs I’ve had were somehow related to this language (translation jobs included). I’ve been studying French for more than 4 years. Although not professionally, I’ve always been interested in that language, as well as Italian (I can understand and read it, but I’m still not fluent enough to speak). My last position was in Madrid-Barajas Airport, where I had the chance to improve my skills concerning these languages, apart form others.
Emotionally linked to art in all its forms, in my degree I was able to read and analyse a lot of literature, which I still do, not only great authors from old times, but also independent books, articles, critics, etc.
I studied Illustration, Graphic and Advertising Design in a professional level (3-year degree), I know about the most important techniques and I've made some pieces of work on them. Film and television, as well as screenwriting, are interesting areas to me. I've been able to develop some scripts for comic books, again not professionally. Finally, music is also among my main fields of interest.
I am looking for challenges that allow me to express myself, I'm a creative individual for that purpose, in which I am able to improve my personal and working background, and learn new stuff. To me, a job is not a simple way of getting money, but an enriching experience to grow and instruct yourself. That is why I'm not afraid of taking responsability, as long as it is based on real expectations. I am aware of the importance of working in a good and nice social environment, I always try to learn from everybody and I'm not reluctant to ask or admit my own mistakes.
I think it is better to be a good team player - it is the different points of view and perspectives what make one develop their own personal and working style -, though I know there are issues one must confront on their own. I'm a committed persona, so working at home does not suppose any problem to me; many times, the environment in which one works inspires oneself, so I guess a mixture of home-located and outside job would be the ideal decision. I'm really fond of travelling, so long-distance positions will be more than welcomed, as well as moving abroad.
