Source text - English Smith of Derby makes clocks that grace many a parish church as well clocks that adorn St Paul’s Cathedral and St Pancras International Station concourse. Over the centuries, Smith of Derby has acquired other clock makers, including Whitchurch, which created the Shanghai Customs House clock at the turn of the century.
That China connection was revived three years ago, when the company once again targetted the China market, partly to offset the downturn in the UK market.
There have been a number of notable successes in China. Smith of Derby will build a huge mechanical clock in Ganzhou, in southeast China, which, when completed, will be the world’s largest. The company fought off competition from a Chinese company which has a 70 per cent market share in China.
This win followed on from earlier commissions in Shanghai in 2008 and 2009.
Smith of Derby is looking forward to many more commissions in China. Bob Betts, the company’s managing director, says that critical to winning contracts is a sound understanding of the Chinese culture.
“Nothing of that is particularly rocket science or earth shattering advice, but do not underestimate the power of the business network in China to get things done,” he says.
Translation - Chinese
