Source text - English Ein Sportstück
Monolog Andi
Was nützt es mir jetzt.
Was könnte Erfolg erst aus mir machen!
Zuwenig wer andrer. Die gibt mir dauernd Anweisungen. Ein andrer sein! Marsch!
Translation - German A Sports Play - Elfriede Jelinek
Monologue Andi
(An enlightened halo appears. Inside a sort of Pietà: The old woman sits in
old fashioned underwear, Combinaige, orthopaedic shoes, etc., on a chair
and has the corpse of her son Jesus, here always called Andi, who is wearing
bodybuilder panties, on her lap. He could also be dressed as an infant, could
also be played by a woman to make him appear genderless. In the
background, bright light illuminates a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger, there
could also be short film sequences projected, repeatedly. In front of the two
lie wreaths with ribbons, which are half withered.
Andi’s following monologue is repeatedly stereotypically interrupted by the
woman with the words: Hello, who speaks? Hello, who speaks!
One could also combine the two big monologues, depending on ones
preference.)
Andi: Listen! I had scarcely engraved the sport’s hieroglyph on my body,
when sport already begun to eat up my body, his friendly host, yes him, with
the cosy colourful pictures in front of the house!, from the inside.
The sport has turned me into a running metre man, who his own carpet like,
again and again had to throw himself up front into the unknown.
And I arrived there now. I always knew one thing: The goal.
But where is it now? My vision worsens! Fog. Everything hurts!
My native alps have grown over my head. Although they have made me tall
child happy, but the cow like doing is nothing for me in the long run.
Doesn’t bring any income. Is not to endure. This content, which slowly comes
from reason, through many working hours fabricated: suddenly turns into a
biting dog and chases us out of the quiet house, now ade. Where am I?
Naturally I had to destroy my content, by slowly, like the liquid inside me, the
only vessel I had, climbing up the edge.
And then one time I had outgrown myself, who would have believed, that I the
poor farm boy, would be capable? I now surrender myself to my great role
model, Arnie. He accepts me as his child and student. But modelling myself in
his light I have to do on my own. The Arnie is now allowed to keep his face.
He is allowed to present himself to the world as one, who has created himself.
But what am I supposed to do? Although… my Arnie once portrayed an
artificial human very realistically. Then he was a stranger who was
manufactured in a factory. Of course in a superhuman factory, which
produces the unnatural. I myself have naturally always stayed natural. What
good does it do me now. We, too, the normal immortals, decide ourselves,
who will stay a stranger to us and who is allowed to become a god.
I always had to do everything on my own, in contrast to this wonderful human
building, which I like so much, Arnie: He delivers himself in one piece after he
finished all the others, too. The more he talks of his mother, the less he
seems to be ascended from her.
He had quiet a success, sakra! The richer he gets the better he becomes.
Unlike me. First he had to be evil, then he could once more be good to us. I
cant say it any other way: A god. A lightning flask, which goes through the
own stern, the farthest edge from which a man can still jump, without
smashing on his own balcony, which he thought to be two breasts from
above. At least two meter deep and fifty centimetre broad is the depth, so:
nothing else but down! The mountains, too, are only there to be climbed. Only
success was able to transform my Arnie in that way. What could success
make out of me! I am much more obedient and transformable! I’d follow every
hunch which will make me stronger.
Evil is like a characterless worker under millions of its own. It only wants
something to do, is without aim, without desire, without anything. Good on the
other hand, the ethos, has its own tone. My beloved role model Arnie, now he
spreads his wings and sets on to his flight, on which all prospects already
belong to him. He doesn’t have to be the evil one anymore! He already has
his own face! He has rubbed his wings again and again on his image, and a
jarring sound rang, when he and his image jumped into each other. Like the
sound of a cricket. A burning wheel through a burning wheel. Look at this
now, meanwhile the pictures are doing it with each other! Soon they will be
able to do it all by themselves. But still we look inside and cheer them on until
our pupils turn red. The glass in front of the TV screen burst out of anger. If I
would try something like that, then only the cruel, teasing mother voice would
appear. Is never satisfied. Too early, too short, too slow, too much myself.
Not enough somebody else. She always gives me directions. Be somebody
else! March! And yet she’s not my mother. This woman doesn’t want me! She
doesn’t want what she created, she always wants more, always more. She
wants her only one to be one who should belong to everyone! Like Arnie. Yes,
someone unique like him, no one ever had only for themselves. But my mama
would have liked him, I believe. Well, now she got it bad!
Stop, Wait, I now see, now that I am down there, Arnie’s roots! They weren’t
able to hold him, he once was able to leave out of mother earth. Is the earth
also my true mother? Now I am with her and inside her. I see shoots!
Are those the right ones? Arnie shows them to me, only I am allowed to see
this upright posture of flesh. He received this posture as a gift for his loyalty
after he stayed on his favourite earth for thirty years.
I try to imitate him, so: My roots, too, finally hold on to this rich earth, but why
can’t I get them out anymore? This was shown to me differently!
I am stuck up to my hips in my own grave, try to work my way out.
Blue the knotted web of my desire. It doesn’t help. Death is the only possible
behaviour for a man - evil life concepts, animosity, war. For a woman the
opposite, the motherhood. Why do these mothers always want other sons
than the ones they have? As much as I kick about and sweat, I was already
stuck in mother earth, when I wanted to start my Odysee to the abroad.
In fact I have never gone away from my poorly image of home
