Source text - English It is prestigious to speak in defense of women's rights. It is even more prestigious if the women whose rights you are speaking for are poor, battered downtrodden African women.
To be on the side of women's rights is to be on the right side of politics. The African Union could not resist the opportunity to declare 2015 The Year of Women's Empowerment.
As a show of commitment to the cause, most African countries have constitutions that guarantee female equality and are signatories to key international conventions.
However, there is a silent proviso that has a strong influence on the attitudes of African countries towards the rights of women. This is the proviso that an African woman can enjoy her rights within certain limits - the line is drawn when the common African man starts to feel threatened. The woman will then be said to be enjoying rights to the point of becoming 'un-African'.
Translation - German Es ist angesehen, Frauenrechte zu verteidigen. Noch angesehener ist es, wenn die Frauen, für deren Rechte man sich einsetzt, arme, misshandelte, unterdrückte afrikanische Frauen sind.
Hinter den Frauenrechten zu stehen bedeutet, auf der richtigen Seite der Politik zu stehen. Die Afrikanische Union ließ es sich daher nicht nehmen, das Jahr 2015 zum Year of Women's Empowerment, zum 'Jahr der Stärkung und Unterstützung der Frauen', zu erklären.
Um ihr Engagement in dieser Angelegenheit unter Beweis zu stellen, wird in den Verfassungen der meisten afrikanischen Länder die Gleichstellung der Frau garantiert. Außerdem hat ein Großteil der afrikanischen Länder die wichtigsten internationalen Konventionen unterzeichnet.
Dennoch gibt es stillschweigende Bedingungen, die großen Einfluss auf die Einstellung der afrikanischen Bevölkerung gegenüber den Frauenrechten haben. Dazu gehört die Bedingung, dass eine afrikanische Frau ihre Rechte innerhalb gewisser Grenzen in Anspruch nehmen kann. Die Grenze ist allerdings schon gezogen, sobald der einfache afrikanische Mann beginnt, sich bedroht zu fühlen. Ab einem gewissen Punkt, an dem eine Frau ihre Recht zu sehr genießt, wird sie als 'unafrikanisch' betrachtet.
