Source text - English E. P. Thompson could be described as the sociologists' historian. There are few historians whom sociologists are more fond of quoting, and it is possibly true that Thompson's work is more highly esteemed in sociology than it is among at least certain segments of the historical profession. The affinity which sociologists feel for Thompson's work can be explained on a superficial level by reference to Thompson's concern with problems of class formation and class consciousness, topics which have always been regarded as of primary importance in sociological analysis.
But there is more to the matter than this. There is something in the style of history which Thompson practises that has a definite appeal for those coming from a sociological background. On the face of things this seems quite eccentric. For Thompson has been savagely critical of the sorts of concepts and approaches which sociologists tend to favour when analysing, not just problems of class structure, but more general aspects of institutions. It is not only structuralist Marxists whose writings resemble the clockwork model that the Earl of Orrery devised; something similar is generic to sociological writing as a whole, in Thompson's view. Why should sociologists find attractive the writings of an author whose comments about their efforts are, for the most part, less than complimentary? The answer, I think, is that those educated within the framework of orthodox sociological thought — whether they be Marxist or non-Marxist — discover in Thompson's work something which they recognize to be absent in much sociological writing. This something we could loosely call a sense of agency.

Over the past generation, radical-democratic ideas have reemerged as an important intellectual and political force. This reemergence reflects a combination of skepticism about the regulatory capacities of national governments and concerns about the capacity of conventional democracies to engage the energies of ordinary citizens. By "conventional democracies," we mean systems of competitive representation, in which citizens are endowed with political rights, including the rights of speech, association, and suffrage; citizens advance their interests by exercising their political rights, in particular by voting for representatives in regular elections; elections are organized by competing political parties; and electoral victory means control of government, which gives winning candidates the authority to shape public policy through legislation and control over administration. Arguably, any mass democracy must be organized at least in part as a system of competitive representation. Radical democrats acknowledge this basic fact of political life, but seek a fuller realization of democratic values than competitive representation itself can attain. In particular, radical-democratic ideas join two strands of democratic thought. First, with Rousseau, radical democrats are committed to broader participation in public decision-making. The exact meaning of these and other elements of this definition are open to discussion and depend upon social constructions. What is “integrity” in the discharge of public or other duties is defined by social and professional norms that may vary by time and place. And the meaning of “bribery” is negotiable and elastic. The concept assumes that A conveys a payment, gift or favor to B, and B makes some decision, provides some service, or takes some action that improves A’s welfare, and can do so because he occupies some organizational position. Imputation of bribery further assumes a) that the two sets of events are causally related – there is some quid pro quo – they are not simply independent of one another; and b) that this give and take is inappropriate by legal or by commonly accepted local moral standards, or both. Whether either of these two conditions is actually met is often the subject of contention.
A slightly broader conception of corruption involves not an exchange between two identified individuals, but a single individual using a position in which he is trusted, to appropriate an organization’s goods or services that he does not deserve. Embezzlement is the type case. A recent example would be corporate managers who erected elaborate accounting frauds for their own enrichment, at the expense of shareholders. Note that a crucial element here is the local conception of who in an organization “deserves” what under which circumstances.

Source text - English The meaning of the “guetto” in American society and social science has shifted over time as a function of the ways in which the country’s political and intellectual elites have conceived of the intertwining problems of ethnicity and poverty in the metropolis (Ward 1989). Sechematically, one may distinguish three stages in the semantic trajectory of the term leading up to the contemporary debate.
From Jackson to Jefferson, the European import “ghetto” was applied strictly to residential concentrations of Eastern European Jews who settled in seaports along the Atlantic. During this initial period, neighborhoods of physical and social degradation thought to thwart efforts at individual uplift and group improvement were labeled slums (Lubove 1962).
As the Progressive Era rolled on, the “ghetto” expanded to designate the sociospatial confinement of exotic newcomers to the city – lower class Europeans of Southern and East-Central provenance as well as African-Americans fleeing the opressive regime of the South to rally to the “promised land” of the North. The term then referred broadly to the intersection between the ethnic neighborhood and the slum, where segregation combined with housing dilapidation to exacerbate urban ills and hinder participation in societal life.

Neste período inicial, os bairros onde a degradação física e social frustrava quaisquer esforços de ascensão individual e melhoria do grupo foram rotulados de slums ou favelas (Lubove, 1962).
Com o desenrolar da era progressista, o termo “gueto” se expandiu para designar o confinamento socioespacial de recém-chegados exóticos à cidade – europeus de classe baixa, provenientes do sul e da região centro-oriental da Europa, além de afroamericanos fugindo do regime opressivo do sul, buscando alcançar a “terra prometida” do norte. O termo então se referia, de maneira geral, à intersecção entre o bairro étnico e a favela, onde a segregação se aliava à dilapidação das moradias, exacerbando os males urbanos e inibindo a participação na vida social.
