So, you’re fresh out of high school, head held high with big boy shoes fit tightly on both feet, you’re finally taking your first steps in life. With no more shackles holding you down you’ve finally got free time to do whatever you want. Job opportunities are popping up left and right and your buddies from high school are more hyperactive than ever, but instead of taking the easy peasy slow lane in life you’ve decided to make the biggest (and perhaps wisest) investment of all: taking up higher education.
Enrolling into a university is a pretty big step, with the biggest step of all being the first choice you’re going to make: “What career do I want to commit to?” Not only is this going to determine your entire professional career and all the possible paths in life this may imply, but it will also determine whether you end up doing something you like or consider worthwhile. In order for you to make the right decision, let’s go over some of the most trending careers of 2014.
1. Business & Administration: This is the bread and butter of any would be entrepreneur. Here you’ll learn how to startup your own business, and how to manage it with its survival and success beyond the initial years as a main goal. Keep in mind that most businesses fail during their startup phases, which is why knowledge and correct planning are crucial in this line of work. If climbing the corporate ladder is what you’re looking for, then this is also one of the careers to keep in mind due to all the branching paths it may lead to.
2. Marketing and Advertisement: If you’d like to get a deep understanding of everything that is customer related, then this is definitely the career you’re looking for. Here you’ll learn how to analyze market trends and customer needs, in order to contribute heavily to the planning phases of a business. You’ll spend most of your time doing market analysis and measuring customer satisfaction, and with these results organizing and putting into action marketing strategies related to product positioning, covering everything from price setting to the actual creation of ads.
3. Accounting: If you’re big with numbers and you like keeping everything in order, then look no further. As an accountant you’ll keep records of every single step your company makes, whether it be a simple purchase order of every day office equipment or a major bank shattering sale, everything has to go through you. As an accountant you can either function as a specialized in-house supervisor of company accounts and inventory, or as an auditor. If you choose to be an auditor, companies will call you to their aid whenever management senses that something sketchy might be happening. It’s worth mentioning that as an accountant you can always find work with the government tax agencies.
4. Programming & Web Development: E-Commerce and App development has become a well fleshed out business full of money making opportunities, with this in mind, companies are always looking for professionals that would help them extend their reaches into the digital realm. With smartphones trending at an all time high, Apps are bringing in tons of money and free advertisement, so whether you’re working as a freelancer or as a full time developer, there’s always work available. Also, companies are always looking for professionals that can put into operation ERP systems and “Best of Breed” programs into their company structures, so always stay on the lookout.
Now that we’ve gone over some of the most trending careers of the year, hopefully you’ll be able to make an informed decision on your own career path. New Years Eve is just two steps away and with the coming celebrations we’re all welcoming the new pioneering tech of the dystopian far away future of the year 2015. Any description using the word Dystopian might seem like a funny running gag reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984, but just how frightening is the near future really? Are we ready for this new generation of technology and the new risks involved? And, what can we do to protect ourselves against this seemingly unstoppable juggernaut of data mining?
In order to get a better picture of the coming hardships, let’s take a look at the current state of affairs related to internet security and user privacy.
Every day, more than 200 billion emails are sent across the world in a never ending stream of data. Through these means, hundreds of millions of users are constantly sharing highly confidential information. Although it may seem like these emails are protected in a number of ways, including everything from the most basic Web-of-Trust Security Certifications, to two-step password verification systems, all of this information is actually up for grabs to the highest bidder, or as we’ll soon cover, whoever flexes the most.
- “My information is for sale to the highest bidder? What exactly do you mean with that?”
Let’s look back at the revelations done by Business Insider in 2010 with Mark Zuckerberg’s (CEO and President of the Facebook social networking site) incredibly revealing commentaries on personal privacy. In this famous Instant Messaging exchange between himself and a former friend of his, Mark admits that he’s using Facebook user’s personal information for his own personal gain.
This has only been reinforced by the company’s new public shareholders, as Facebook is actively looking for new ways to turn in a profit by selling user information to online marketers and other buyers, whoever they may be. Worst of all, the data being sold not only limits itself to whatever you yourself have put up on your own profile, but also includes whatever information friends and family have posted about you. Instant messaging, browsing habits and even geomapping information obtained from your occasional logins using your mobile phone. In other words, spies could potentially know where you are, what your interests are, where you live, what you’ve said and done in the past and when to find you.
- “Whoever flexes the most? You mean, like, bullying?”
Yes, as crazy as it may sound, bullying for information is a very real thing. Government agencies have been doing this for many decades, and now, with the major disclosures done by The Washington Post in June about project PRISM, we now have a clearer picture of the full extent of the U.S. espionage done by their intelligence agencies through massive data mining efforts started in 2007 and still continuing to this very day with no sign of ever slowing down. This constitutes the most serious breach of privacy conducted by the U.S. government to its own citizens in the entirety of American history. Thanks to the efforts of many investigators and whistleblowers, we now know that the U.S. government and U.K. spying agencies have had access to all the information gathered by the world’s largest internet behemoths including: Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and Google. Although some of these initially resisted government intervention, while others were quick to accept the terms and conditions set, in the end they all gave into the massive pressure put by the single most powerful government entity in the world.
With personal information being used by identity thieves, corporate spies and nosy government agencies, can you really risk putting your data out there? Nowadays, due to our increasing reliance on smartphones and data gathering Apps, with every passing moment we’re being increasingly exposed to these risks with very little to show to outweigh the cons. Considering the current trend of internet privatization and the disappearance of internet anonymity, this is only the beginning. We’re stepping into a world where everything we say and do online will be attached to our identity and available to other people, no matter how dangerous this may be.
This is why keeping information private and only available to the user has become the top priority of many citizens. Invasion of privacy shouldn’t be tolerated, and as such we offer a solution available to the everyday user: certified user-friendly end-to-end PGP encryption. Con la víspera de año nuevo a solo unos pasos de distancia, y con las celebraciones que se acercan, estamos dando la bienvenida a una nueva tecnología de vanguardia del futuro lejano y distópico del año 2015. Toda descripción que lleve dentro de sí la palabra Distopia podrá parecer como una broma recurrente evocativa del famoso 1984 de George Orwell, ¿pero qué tan tenebroso es realmente dicho futuro cercano? ¿Estaremos listos para esta nueva generación de tecnología y los nuevos riesgos que involucra? ¿Y qué podemos hacer para protegernos contra esta fuerza indetenible que es el espionaje de datos?
Para así contar con una mejor idea de las dificultades que nos esperan, demos un vistazo a la situación actual respecto a la seguridad informática y la privacidad del usuario.
Cada día, más de 200 billones de correos electrónicos son enviados alrededor del mundo en un flujo sin fin de datos. Por este medio, cientos de millones de usuarios se encuentran constantemente compartiendo entre sí información altamente confidencial. Aunque pueda parecer que estos correos electrónicos estén protegidos de distintas formas, incluyendo así desde los certificados Web-of-Trust más básicos, hasta sistemas de verificación de contraseña de dos pasos, en realidad toda esta información se encuentra a la disposición del mejor postor, o como veremos a continuación, quien sea el que ejerza mayor presión.

Demos un vistazo atrás a las revelaciones hechas por el Business Insider en el 2010, con los comentarios altamente reveladores de Mark Zuckerberg (CEO y presidente de la red social Facebook) respecto a la privacidad personal. En este famoso intercambio de mensajes entre él mismo y un ex – amigo suyo, Mark confiesa haber usado la información personal de los usuarios de Facebook para fines propios.
Dado los nuevos accionistas públicos de la compañía, este hecho sólo ha sido reforzado, estando dado que Facebook se encuentra ahora en la activa búsqueda de nuevas formas de generar utilidades con la venta de la información de los usuarios a compañías de marketing online y demás compradores, sean quienes sean. Lo peor de todo es que la información vendida no se limita a lo que tú mismo hayas publicado sobre tu perfil, sino que además incluye toda información que tus amigos y familiares hayan publicado sobre ti. Mensajes instantáneos, hábitos de internet e incluso información de GPS obtenido cuando hayas accedido a tu cuenta mediante un aparato móvil. En otras palabras, espías podrían potencialmente saber exactamente dónde estás, cuáles son tus intereses, dónde vives, lo que hayas dicho y hecho en el pasado y cuándo encontrarte.
• “¿Quién ejerza mayor presión? ¿Te refieres a bullying?
Eso mismo. Sin importar que tan extraño suene, el bullying para obtener información es una realidad.
