French to English: Cristal de Couzan, The Renaissance of an Exceptional Sparkling Mineral Water General field: Marketing Detailed field: Food & Drink
Translation - English A mineral spring discovered in Antiquity by the Romans and rediscovered by a local doctor from Foreze in the 17th century.
A mineral water that jetted in a village became a well-known thermal spa of the Rhone-Alps region.
With a pleasing taste and sought-after therapeutical qualities, Cristal de Couzan was endorsed by the Academy of Medicine and the Ministry of Health.
A rare mineral water whose production was abandoned in 1993 and has been reborn to bring back all of its benefits.
The Romans, who founded and fortified the village of Sail, established the Couzan Spring and were the first to drink it as they discovered how to de-salinate it and be healed by this healthy water.
Legends recount how several invasions surrounding the village of Sail-sous-Couzan left the Spring forgotten; however, the spring retained all of its virtues and vigor. In 1612, Claude de la Roue, a doctor from Montbrison, rediscovered the fountain of mineral water.
In the 19th century, Cristal de Couzan became a famous and sought-after water. The village of Sail-sous-Couzan became a prestigious French spa.
In 1870, Mario Proth, a famous French journalist, wrote in his travel diary about his stay in Sail-sous-Couzan:
«In Sail, there was a spring captured at the foot of a mountain bearing the name of a precious stone. Approaching the mineral spring, I heard a formidable bubbling sound like a distant torrent. It was the water of Couzan that jetted from a granite rock.
I was offered a glass; cold like the refreshing water of the Alps, pure and
white, transparent as the morning dew, it sparkled like Champagne.»
