English to French: The perfect versus imperfect tense Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English There are effectively, 2 main differences between the perfect and the imperfect tense in French.
1. The perfect tense is an action which occurs in the past which is complete whereas the imperfect tense usually indicates an ongoing action.
2. The imperfect tense is mainly used with descriptions.
For example:
"Quand il est arrivé à environ midi, j'étais en train de finir mon chocolat chaud. Il avait un air de tristesse."
The first part of the sentence "Quand...midi" uses the perfect tense because it is a complete action within a given moment. The rest of the sentence "j'étais..." uses the imperfect tense because it is an ongoing process. The second sentence is a description.
Translation - French Il y a effectivement 2 différences principales entre the passé composé et l'imparfait en Français.
1. On emploi the passé composé dans le cas où un action au passé est complèt pendant que l'imparfait est utilisé avec les actions qui continue.
2. L'imparfait est employé aussi avec les descriptions.
Par exemple:
"Quand il est arrivé à environ midi, j'étais en train de finir mon chocolat chaud. Il avait un air de tristesse."
La première partie de la phrase "Quand...midi" emploi the passé composé parce que c'est un action complèt. L'autre moitié de la phrase "j'étais..." emploi l'imparfait parce que l'action de boire une boisson continue. La deuxième phrase est une description.

Source text - Afrikaans Die goedere wat ek bestel het op Dinsdag the 4de April 2006 is nie in a geskikte toestand vir bedryfs onthalwe nie. Daar was minstens 3 bokse vrugte wat oop was en in the algemeen geensins in 'n toestand is om te verkoop aan my Suid-Afrikaanse kliente hier in Engeland.

Translation - English The goods that I ordered on Tuesday 4th April 2005 is not at all in a suitable condition for resale. There were at least 3 boxes of fruit which were open and generally not in a good condition to sell to my South African clients here in England.
I would like to know if these can be replaced as soon as possible and kindly request that I be contacted any mornings ranging from Monday to Friday during eight thirty and eleven thirty.
