Dear Mac users,

I'm looking for a software that runs on a Mac for word counts, character counts, line counts, and page counts for common file formats. I used to be really happy with Anycount, especially since you can enter individual units (e. g. 55 instead of 50 characters = 1 line etc.) and export the results in Excel. However, it only runs on a PC and I find it too exhausting to start Parallels every time I need to count a couple of documents...

Can anyone recommend a similar programme compatible with Mac OS?

I'm grateful for any hint.

Many thanks and have a great day.

The 'perfect' solution isn't available yet Feb 2, 2013

The waiting is for a Java tool that can count words on different platforms. Perhaps it'll be there some day ...

When counting lines, everything is simple: 55 (or 50) characters are just 55 characters. When counting words, things are starting to get complex: nearly every CAT tool (or word processor for that) has its own definition of a word. Differences in word counts can be gigantic.

That being said, there are some solutions for counting words on a Mac.

WordService from DEVONtechnologies:

http://www.devontechnologies.com/download/products.html

Statistics …
Count characters, spaces, words and lines. As this function does not modify the
selected text, it is possible to use this also for read-only text like received email
messages or HTML pages.

(you cannot simply drop a zip or folder with documents on it ...)

In the App Store:

Word Counter
http://www.ilialang.com/mac/ilialang_in_development/Word_Counter.html

Word Counter supports the following file formats TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, HTML and WORDML. There is a nice video on the site that shows the tight integration with OS X (Dock icons, Drag and Drop, voice-over etc.)

wordCount

PS Moderator, please move this thread to the Mac forum.

CafeTran? Feb 2, 2013

I was going to mention yet another "Word Counter" - http://www.supermagnus.com/mac/Word_Counter/index.html - that does a good job, but can't handle .docx files.

But why not just use CafeTran? It can provide all the necessary statistics, plus it can calculate your invoices: http://cafetran.wikidot.com/using-statistics-and-billing On top of that, you'll get the most advanced CAT tool available, and it costs the same as the pro edition of AnyCount, € 80.--.

Using CafeTran as a word count utility Feb 3, 2013

Interesting approach, Hans. Perhaps we should ask the developer for a word count version of CafeTran? I can already see CafeCount becoming very popular.

But seriously, using CafeTran for counting files has the following advantages:

* CafeTran supports many file formats:

Trados TTX, SDLXLIFF, SDLPPX and:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

* You can determine the percentage of internal repetitions and the homogeneity that gives you an indication of the coherence of the text.

The disadvantage would be that you have to convert the old Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .xls) to their modern equivalents first (.docx, .xlsx). Of course there are tools for that.

Automator again Feb 3, 2013

Hardly a disadvantage. Automator takes care of that: http://cafetran4mac.blogspot.com/2012/05/batch-converting-word-files-using.html
And there are Actions for Excel and PowerPoint as well. All free from our friends from Redmond.

Cheers,

Hans

Thanks Feb 4, 2013

Dear all,

first of all thanks for moving my question to the right forum - I wasn't aware I was in the wrong one. I'm grateful for the suggestions you've made, now I'm at the right place.

I tried word counter (by supermagnus), but as wasn't what I had expected (no lines, pages etc.). I haven't heard of the others yet, and I'm excited to try them out. And I'll definitely take a closer look at CaféTran as well!

Thanks and have a great week.

Word Counter project to adopt Feb 4, 2013

The author of Word Counter writes:

I have tried in vain to find someone (or group) to take over the code and keep adding to it, but if I ever can find someone I will be glad to assist in keeping it up to date.

Perhaps there are programmers here that are willing to adopt the project?

Great idea! Feb 6, 2013

@trhanslator: That would be great! Or if you could at least define the length of the words (max. characters instead of "words with more than X characters"). That would already be enough, and we could count also count "words" with a length of e.g. 55 characters (= line) or 1,500 characters (= page) and so on. It doesn't matter what it's called

Unfortunately I am not a programmer, but I support the idea.
