火星语 Jul 16, 2008

Jul 16, 2008

Well, I think the whole point is, nobody is here to police the language of others - at least I'm not. But you'd better be ready with a good excuse if and when others get offended and challenge the use of obscenities.

Nowadays the f-word is mostly used for emphasis in everyday usage, not unlike the Chinese equivalent in the Chinese language. But it is still considered a big no-no in polite society. Plus you would almost never see the f-word in print. That's why it is so shocking

Nowadays the f-word is mostly used for emphasis in everyday usage, not unlike the Chinese equivalent in the Chinese language. But it is still considered a big no-no in polite society. Plus you would almost never see the f-word in print. That's why it is so shocking to see videos made with non-stop swearing on youTube ... not cool ... it does nothing but demonstrate to the world how low-class and ignorant the person making the video is.

Networks routinely bleep out four-letter words, and would get fined a hefty penalty by the FCC for every incident of violation. I remember a while ago reading about Joan Rivers getting booted off the BBC set while doing her shtick. She said she thought they could have bleeped out the four-letter words, but I guess you can't take things for granted and expect everyone to be as accommodating as the good ol'U.S.A. broadcasting networks For the same reason, a lot of shows take their series to HBO where the f-word is not required to be censored. Some things are only good for a laugh or two, but not really fit for public consumption.

I watch "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares" religiously. Compared to down under, here they at least have sense enough to bleep out all the expletives. I know it's not nice to yell at people all the time, but Gordon Ramsay's hot temper is apparently aimed at incompetency - 所谓"恨铁不成钢". For me, "Judge Judy" kind of falls into the same category. She never fails to give the parties appearing in front of her a good talkin' to.

I also like Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan, not so much for their personalities, but mostly for their judgment on talent in talent competitions.

A cartoon 孙悟空 would have gotten my vote. This is where "nationalism" is really appropriate. Kewpie doll-like figures are fine, but IMO lack imagination and uniqueness.

一次确立五个吉祥物可能是奥运史上的第一次 Jul 23, 2008

大家好!

一次确立五个吉祥物(mascots)可能是奥运史上的第一次,好像别的国家都是1-2个。为何不可以五个呢?可以想象独生子女们都在想着法子把五个吉祥物全部收集齐全,他们的父母可能会有点犯愁。最高兴的可能是商家。我在想下一届奥运会会有多少只吉祥物,会不会超出五个?
