Hello,
Sorry if this topic has been posted before.
Today a prospective client contacted me with a document to translate; so far, so good The document is fairly straightforward, and I provided a quote based on number of words of source language. They have provided a first and last name, but no company association, and they responded to my quote with the below:
Here is the note they sent me: I quite agree with your price quote and I am willing to pay for your service.
This project is a research paper being sponsor for a seminar coming up soon,
so I would like to make an advance payment or make the full payment so you
know you have my job with you but the payment can only made by Check and is
Within the US only, do get back to me with the following payment information
in the format below.
1. Full Name to be written on the Check
2. Full Physical Address:
3. Mobile number
Your payment will be prepared once I have the requested details. Payment will
be received before you send the document. Get back to me asap
My question is could this be a scam of some kind? I don't know why I feel alert about this. Maybe because I only mentioned half payment down and they are offering payment in full up front. Does the info they ask for make sense or could it be used to defraud me in some way? What info should i request to prove they are legitimate? ▲ Collapse

If more than a couple of words are spent on payment details, it's a scam.

If someone sends you a document out of the blue, use Google to check the first sentence. In many cases this will reveal the offer as a scam.
