Preferred CAT Tool Jan 7, 2015

None of the above. Although I use CAT tools for my work, I hate them.

Trados Jan 7, 2015

Because this is the only CAT tool Japanese customers seem to know - I've never been asked to use anything else.

Wordfast Classic Jan 7, 2015

I wanted to say something along the lines of "the only good CAT tool is a dead CAT tool" but I have actually grown to love Wordfast Classic.

Like the original Word-based Trados, Wordfast Classic is very simple to use and doesn't restrict me at all, obviously it has a better memory than I do, and I much prefer the segmented interface to working from a printout or having the texts side by side on screen.

New Trados and Wordfast Pro, on the other hand, are most definitely the work of the devil and are to be avoided at all costs unless you are a technical translator/robot.

Other - not preferred, required Jan 7, 2015

I use Trados, but only because agencies use it. Trados have captured a large share due to marketing.

I use Wordfast, and I have used a couple of others as Trados (that I do not use anymore since it does not run on my MAC and I would NEVER use Windows on a MAC!!).

SO I use Wordfast as the cost/efficiency ratio is good and I translate technical texts and some of them are very similar.

I hate Trados and all the marketing behind it, I hate it because it is too expensive and it seems you MUST have it if you want to work with some companies.

trados and memoQ Jan 7, 2015

I have trados 2011 but just use for converting document types agencies use. In fact, I hate it. It is very best at marketing, just this.

I use memoQ and love it though it has some drawbacks like requiring high system capabilities.

Trados Jan 7, 2015

I use SDL Trados all the time, or for at least 95 % of my work. For me, it is mostly efficient and I don't find the prices expensive if you consider the amount of work owning Trados brings in. I am occasionally asked by a specific customer to use Across, which I find slow, clunky and prone to crashing by comparison, partly because the fact it is (or was, not sure if it's still the case) not compliant with a 64-bit operating system means I have to have it installed on a virtual machine.

Windows XP was the only Microsoft product I'd include among these, yet it only entered the list after the launch of Vista, Windows 7, and particularly Windows 8.

I have been using WordFast Classic since the days it was free. Later bought a license, and have been renewing it ever since.

In the meantime, I've also used WordFast Pro, Wordfast Anywhere, MemoQ, and Passolo. I didn't particularly like any of them so much to change and embark on a new learning curve.

Why isn't WFC my "preferred" CAT tool?
Because I simply don't like its $19.99-shareware look, feel, performance, and user-unfriendliness. As it is now, it should still be free, or close to free. Selling WFC is like selling muddy, rust-tasting drinking water in the desert. Yet none of the others I tried tastes much better.

I wish Adobe developed a CAT tool. Believe it or not, they got Acrobat right on v4. Current version is 11. They only had to keep enhancing it to sell upgrades, in order to pay their bills. They got PageMaker right on v6.52; they had to launch v7, and then start over with InDesign for the same reason.

OmegaT Jan 7, 2015

I answered OmegaT simply because it is the only CAT tool I have tried. (I only very recently converted to using CAT tools). I am satisfied with how it gives a boost to my translation memory, and I think it has made me faster in some translations. As it is free, I have not seen the need to try other CAT tools, and I am wary of SDL Trados that seems to be a bit of an agency trap.

I really like Wordfast Classic. It's easy to use and I can see the text in its intended format.

I am wondering of this poll is sponsored or some kind of backdoor market research or promotion or something ... in which case I would be wiser to keep my opinions to myself.
To be honest, I tolerate Trados iniitally because some clients wanted me to use it, but I do see benefits in consistency, ease of some quality control procedures, etc. but 'prefer' is a bit of a reach.
