Is this "offensive language"? [not for the very easily offended] Thread poster: Christopher Schröder

I've just had a post deleted by ProZ for "offensive language", viz "a cunning linguist".
This is not offensive language by any measure.
There is an innuendo, sure, which some might not like. But the language is not offensive.
Should not ProZ, as a forum for linguists (cunning or not), be a little more precise in its use of language?

There is always an element of subjectivity. Even if one is not personally offended by something, when deciding whether or not to delete, the idea is probably to consider whether it is likely to be considered offensive by others, within reason. It is also a matter of context and you obviosuly cannot repost here, lest if be deleted!

I have no problem (well, not much of one) with ProZ deleting my comment on the basis that people of a highly puritanical persuasion might find a sexual reference offensive. ProZ is American, after all.
I just think there is a difference between offensive content and offensive language, and if ProZ can't even word its rules properly, how well does that reflect on the site, its members, the profession, etc, etc.

Anyway, this certainly shouldn't be a reason to moderate a post.

Such innuendo (one that, as Jenny says, is not particularly original) should not in my view be grounds for removal.
But then again, just last week, a post was removed (in the “Have a nice day” thread) that represented the gerund form of the “f word” with seven asterisks. This removal in turn triggered the removal of other posts (including my own) that quoted the offending representation.
Such removals really do cross the line.

As far as I know, the joke has actually originated in Hollywood. At least that's where I heard it first, on a US California-themed TV show, and those folks are not particularly keen on reusing someone else's material. What bugged me was that it was a little trite, what with it being recycled and all, and maybe not in a very good taste in a professional setting. But offensive? God no. What are we, little kids here?
