We have been using Trados Studio for a while now, but one thing still puzzles us.
When we have, say a 98% match from the memory in a new translation, and the target translation doesn't need to change, because a mistake in the source has been corrected, typing CTRL+Enter always adds the new segment to the TM instead of overwriting the old one.

Thanks for any help

100% vs 98% Sep 25, 2017

Hello Hans,

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, but the function "Overwrite existing translation units" only overwrites 100% matches, not 98% ones. If you would like to get rid of those, you should delete them manually (although I see no point in that).

Explaining the workflow Sep 25, 2017

Hi Ekaterina
Thank you for your reply.
There are actually 2 workflows in our company for the internal translation of user manuals:
1) A near-native speaker makes a first full translation of a text in Studio that is reviewed (also in Studio) by a native speaker. The near native speaker uses ctrl+enter to send the translated segments to the TM.
The question is: When the review is finished and the translation finalized, will the segments in the TM be overwritten, when the ap

The question is: When the review is finished and the translation finalized, will the segments in the TM be overwritten, when the appropriate setting "Overwrite existing translation units" is activated?
2) A minor correction is made in the source document. The TM pretranslates with a high match (eg. 98%) but the target language is still valid, as the correction only affected the source.
The question is: With the same setting, will the segment replace the previous entry in the TM or will it be added?

Thank you very much for your time!
Hans

Hi Hans,

In situation 1 the TM will be overwritten after the new validation (CTRL+Enter). In situation 2 you will end up with two source segments and thus with two target correspondences. If you would like to get rid of the first TM correspondence, you have to delete it manually from the TM. If the native reviser has made changes to the target in situation 1, (s)he has to do it again manually in situation 2, as changes in a segment do not propagate in fuzzy match segments, only in 1
