How I can display the source and target segments one directly below the other, instead of side-by-side ? I am using the trial version of Trados Studio 2017 SR1

As far as I know... nope.
The options dialog does mention "side-by-side editor", but there is no corresponding "above-and-below editor" in the options.
When doing bilingual review, you can choose to export segments in either side-by-side or above-and-below view, but that is only for the Word file, and not for the editor inside Trados itself. And I don't think Trados 2021 will have this option either.
Look, Trados is not for everyone. Before you buy Trados, you must take a course on memorization so that you are able to memorize the text in one column before your eyes move to the other column. Or, get used to regularly placing your fingers on the screen in order to trace the text in both columns.

I have a vague recollection about a plugin ...

that allows to change the editor layout from side-by-side to the above-below configuration (memoQ style)

Hi Angel, It's called Vertical Review, available from the SDL App Store. The app opens a separate window with the respective segments highlighted. You cannot edit the segments, but you can read them very nicely, in a much more user-friendly way than the standard Trados layout. You can configure the colors and number of viewed segments, which is nice. However, you still have to apply the changes to the regular text. HTH, Sandra
