Visio Sep 4, 2018

Studio 2019 will handle Microsoft Visio files, which Studio 2017 won't. I occasionally get MS Visio files to translate, but not often enough to justify paying for the software package, which isn't cheap.

This makes the upgrade worthwhile for me.

Was SDL 2019 upgrade worth it? Sep 14, 2018

Hi everybody,

Roy Oestensensen, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I had viewed the video you mentioned, but was looking for a more down to earth video about the real possibilities for this new version to speed up my work as a translator.

Hi everybody,

Roy Oestensensen, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I had viewed the video you mentioned, but was looking for a more down to earth video about the real possibilities for this new version to speed up my work as a translator.

Michael Beijer, thank you for the multifarious link. I was not aware of this video by Nora Diaz. That is the type of "down to earth videos" I was looking for. Nora's feedback and help are as always invaluable. Also, thanks for mentioning the RyS Termbase & Translation Assembler plugin. Adding a term in multiterm has always been the time when Trados would crash for me. I have contacted the developper of this app to try it out and see whether it works for me.

Samuel Murray, thank you too for your feedback.

Chritine Andersen, thank you for your feedback. I guess bugs are to be expected at this stage.

Wojciech, thank you, I see that, like me, you have not "taken the plundge" yet.

Thank you, Mike Roebuck, also for your feedback.

Overall, I will probably take the plundge at some stage.

I have a last question: Did you notice that this new version of Trados required more power from your computer i.e is Trados 2019 slower or running at more or less the same speed than 2017 during your everyday use?

Cheers,
Ollie

Why, why not, when Dec 30, 2018

Hi Colleagues,

IMHO, there's no point in skipping an upgrade, if we will upgrade sooner or later. The most apparent reason for not upgrading may be avoiding its cost. However, when we upgrade from, say, 2017 to 2021, the upgrade fee we will pay will hardly differ than the cumulative cost of upgrading from 2017 to 2019 and then 2019 to 2021.

Meanwhile, we miss the chance of taking advantage of bug fixes, stability and performance improvements, which are invariably a part of every upgrade, even if we don't notice much difference on the foreground as an end user. Considering all these, I think it's a good idea to upgrade especially when we get an attractive offer.

On the other hand, I am always cautious when upgrading to a very recent version, whether it is an operating system or productivity software. The main reason for that is, new version will most probably be plagued with new and serious bugs. Therefore, I prefer waiting for some time before installing an upgrade, allowing the developers the time to fix those new and serious bugs. Nearly 10 years ago, I preferred to wait for one year or so. Now, given contemporary technology, I suffice with 6 months or so. Even though I purchase the upgrade license, I never hurry to install it on my computer. This was again the case for Trados Studio 2019. I have paid the license fee and purchased the upgrade but it sits there in my SDL account waiting for installation. Justifying my patience, SDL recently released a SR1 version of Trados Studio 2019, which provided fixes for some bugs.

Thank you for reading!
Happy new year for all!

Don't pay for it Nov 8, 2019

It's absolutely TRAGIC. Starts one in two times. I'm just uninstalling it because it went crazy after it declared one of the projects faulty. And it's SR1. I'm not waiting for SR2. I want my money BACK. And as for UI, not even the simplest issues like loading more than one AutoSuggest dictionary at once or ONE way to open files (open project, open package, open document - what is it even for???) were fixed.

SR2 was released on 1 Aug 2019. Maybe this is what causes your problem...

You are right, it is available indeed. Nevertheless, re-installation of the newest version hasn't helped, as Trados didn't event start.
What helped was changing the compatibility mode to Windows 7, as it's clearly incompatible with the newest Windows 10 update. Nevertheless, the "there is one wrong character in one of your projects so we've decided to crash the whole project list for an indefinite period of time" error magically reappeared. ‘deepTranslation’ (Back to the future) Apr 5, 2020

OK, so I have gotten so sick of SDL's idiotically bad terminology handling that I just went back to version 2017, so I can test all the very interesting plugins available at the mysterious site:

https://deeptranslation.blogspot.com/

https://deeptranslation.blogspot.com/2020/03/sdl-trados-studio-plugin-use-plain-text_28.html (‘SDL Trados Studio PlugIn - use plain text file as a TermBase [Updated]’)

etc.!

They have a terminology system that is similar to RyS, in that it is blazing fast, and just works, plus all kinds of other stuff SDL have been too stupid to add themselves. Definitely worth checking out! Note though that they all only work with Studio 2017. However, I am now starting to wonder if there is actually anything in 2019 that I will really miss. I suspect the answer will be now, but will report back after testing the deepTranslation plugins.

Michael

Quite funny Apr 16, 2020

I can see that the author of this plugin and the website has quite an unambiguous opinion of SDL
