Un progetto dall'India dove offrono 0.01 cent a parola. Offrono una machine translation (come se ci servisse a qualcosa...). Ma quanto è accettabile una proposta simile? Quante parole tradutece all'ora?

Campanello d'allarme Mar 21, 2019

1) 50 million project!!
2) machine translation
3) agenzia Indiana (che normalmente significa tariffe molto basse)

Conclusione: avanti il prossimo!

In risposta alla tua domanda: dipende dalla tipologia del testo. In generale, tra le 2000 e 3000 al giorno (400 all'ora in media).

A joke? Mar 21, 2019

I don't speak Italian, but what I do understand of it is that 0.01 p/w is a joke, even for India.

No joke: white-collar crime industry averages Mar 21, 2019

Considering the infamous repetition/internal/fuzzy-match discounts and other sly ploys to abuse CAT/PEMT-operators, now it's about the real rates--even for decent language specialists in developed country too. I know no other industry where the vast majority of businesspersons is routinely tricked into and forced to give aways over 80% of the price. That's why I a little worry about the future of 'translation'.

Meanwhile, I can't help wondering, when another "smart businessman" is so proud he translated a $1000 worth project for some $55... On the other hand, so many vivid examples reveal that MT may be not so bad, perhaps.

Everyone gets exactly what deserves)

Not really a joke. I saw fairly recently on Upworks an ad for rates below 0.01 by an outsourcer who had been active on that site (hence successfully able to recruit translators) for some time.

Interesting Mar 21, 2019

I saw another ad here by a Chinese translation agency that offered 1 to 2 cents per word, and the most bids were placed from Italy (ahead of Turkey or Ukraine).

How can it be normal? Mar 21, 2019

Yes it was, but how on earth can it be normal for an EU country? I doubt Italy could be compared to Turkey or Ukraine in terms of standard of living?

"Normal" in a matter-of-fact sense (sadly), not in a "that's OK" sense, as I highly doubt it's "normal" that so many people are willing to work for next to nothing (especially in a Western country)...

It is probably $ as well ! If people accept such rubbish, it is there problem. There are more and more companies, even in Europe (Belgium, more specifically) that want you to only translate a few sentences in a document, etc.. For me that is so unprofessional that I cannot even understand how such companies are allowed to advertise and post here. If people just ran away from such unprofessional posters they would soon lose their business unless their clients are only interested in getting the job done, but do not care about the quality, in which case there is no need to have a document translated.

Undercut the rates (€ 0.0075) ... Mar 22, 2019

... take the job, don´t deliver and outsourcers of these kind will disappear ...
I know nobody will act that way and it is considered unethical, but sometimes you should fight fire with fire. Proposed measures will only work when we would have an organiced community of freelance translators. I´m optimistic that our valuable and well paid translators associations worldwide will soon cooperate and take appropriate measures against these rates ...

Just honor the contract and the deadline but send a completely machine translated text instead. That way they'll 'get the best bang for their buck' until their client realizes the rubbish they sent in. And then hopefully losing their clients, they'll go out of business.
