I know how Trados 7.0 works, and have used it from time to time, but mastered? Can't really be bothered to "master" it | | | Mary Worby United Kingdom Local time: 03:04 German to English + ...
Just one, I suppose. But again, mastered is probably an exaggeration. It is less a well-trained dog than a puppy in training, but it basically does what it's told. I have a lesser knowledge of a second system too. But I am far from mastering it. | | | esperantisto Local time: 05:04 Member (2006) English to Russian + ... SITE LOCALIZER
One, who has mastered a tool is a master, right? Someone who knows everything the tool as good as its developers, can teach others and make improvements? Or what?

Okay. I have taught myself Trados, Across and the simple free SDLX CAT tool, but like the others, mastered? I also use a few other customer specific CAT tools when required.

I have "mastered" an old basic version of Systran MT. It is hilarious to use for its bloopers, for example it translates "piña" (pineapple in Spanish) as "fragmentation grenade". Hours of fun while you work. No seriously, I hardly use it at all. I did try the new "professional" version but it is too complicated and time-consuming to learn to use properly and they changed all the things I liked about the old version. I did try the new "professional" version but it is too complicated and time-consuming to learn to use properly and they changed all the things I liked about the old version. I use Wordfast Basic a lot, but haven't had time to "master" it in the 2 or 3 years I've been using it, so I still have no idea about half on the functions it has. I tried ugrading to the Professional version and immediately sent it back as I found the new interface (Deja Vu style vertical columns) much less comfortable to use than the older one. When will software developers learn the golden rule: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?! ▲ Collapse | | | jacana54 (X) Uruguay English to Spanish + ... I can't say I've mastered any of them, because there are so many functions and tricks that I still don't know, but I'm a happy user of MetaTexis, Trados Freelance 2007 (Tag Editor) and Studio. of software that has to be mastered, have failed miserably. Webinars, seminars, tutorials, manuals, step-by step manuals are proof. - Two CAT I know quite well, the others are of no interest to me. | | | Jeff Whittaker United States Local time: 22:04 Member (2002) Spanish to English + ...
Bought one almost a year ago for $400, learned how to use it, but have not used it once on a real project. No one ever requests a CAT tool and it's faster for me to work without it.

If one considers Tag Editor and Studio 2009 as 2 programs. I am thinking about Memoq, but it's not one of my priorities. S
This question made me wonder how many software packages I have 'mastered' so far. By their nature of never-ending updates, upgrades, plug-ins, add-ons, etc., as soon as one manages to master some software, it's either obsolete or has received enough new features to pose new challenges. I'd say I've mastered Page Maker... across 6 successive versions, over 20+ years! Yes, Adobe still sells its v7, however it's no longer fashionable to use it, but its son - InDesign - instead. As I am a translator, not a graphic designer, I haven't yet faced a publication I couldn't rebuild with PM 6.52. But what's the point? I mastered Astound Presentation, spanning all the range from v2 through v8, though v6 and v7 were completely useless. This software could really have led PowerPoint to its grave. Yet it had severe, insoluble flaws, so its developer phased it out and changed their business scope. The last version was developed for Win 98. Yet when Windows XP came up, all those flaws in Astound suddenly vanished. However by then it was long dead and buried. So, what would be the point in mastering any piece of software? If I have to build a neat and complex PDF from scratch quickly, I still use Page Maker. If I have to edit PowerPoint screens to edit them into a video for a DVD, I still import the whole PPT into Astound to fine-tune and enhance each slide quickly. However I wouldn't expect any client nowadays to ask me about a job specifically using either of these programs. ▲ Collapse

Insofar as they do what I tell them to do, sort of like the dog, I have mastered wordfast and across. I am fonder of the former than the latter. Another agency insists on Fortis. It will be interesting to see the learning curve on that one. | | | JaneD Sweden Local time: 04:04 Member (2009) Swedish to English + ... It lets me do what I want, sometimes | May 23, 2011 |
So I don't think that counts as mastery! | | | wonita (X) China Local time: 22:04 Wordfast classic | May 23, 2011 |
I use the basic functions of Wordfast classic to translate all my word files. It's quite intuitive to use, and makes the translation much more comfortable. I don't intend to learn another Cat tool, as translation only makes up around 30% of all my work, another 70% being interpreting, guiding tours and language teaching. If the client requires a Cat I don't use, I just turn down the job. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How many different CAT tools have you "mastered"?
