Dear Colleagues,

I reworded this entry somewhat.

Do you help colleagues in KudoZ with marketing slogans or sayings? If so, do you not mind if they are indeed used successfully (some might) and all you got is points in KudoZ or maybe no points at all if it was a no-points question?
What about a possible copyright issue once you find that indeed your work has had noticeable success (I admit, it probably won't happen too often.)

Thanks for your input.... See more

I don't think you should see the KudoZ system as a means to sell people your creative work.

If you find yourself thinking that an answer you are about to give constitutes creative content for which you require remuneration, that probably means it's best not to proceed with posting. Nobody's forcing you to do so, after all...

I think the assumption is that when you answer a KudoZ question, then you license the asker to use your answer for the purpose of the question.

Idea behind Kudoz is to help others Oct 25, 2011

The idea of Kudoz is to help others, if we are successful in helping others it only means that we succeeded.

It may not be the best comparison but if you gave someone a gift and he would use it to purchase a lottery ticket and won - would you ask for interest?

The idea of Kudoz reminds me of Sherlock Holmes - Twice already in hos career had Holmes helped him to attain success, his own sole reword being the intellectual joy of the problem.

Cheers... See more

I agree with Stanislas. I see Kudoz as about helping out and the point system is just a feature to make it more like a game. What I "got" from it or otherwise doesn't enter my equation.

I get at least as much out of KudoZ as I put in Oct 25, 2011

I am addicted to KudoZ.
I have to turn off notifications when I am really busy!

I have no idea how many times I have looked in the glossaries or found the answer to a problem by searching.
Plus good-natured and eye-opening explanations... before I ever need to ask a new question.

But I think very, very few of them are the type that could really be copyrighted or draw royalties.

It might be assumed, but in case a dispute arises, the court might not share that view... Note that in most juridictions copyrights are attributed to the author automatically and the rights for commercial use might be assumed to be transferred (as it is often interpreted in case of translations), but do not have to be.

Help Oct 25, 2011

Help is just that. The reward comes from helping.

If a suggestion I make on KudoZ becomes the next "Coca-Cola adds life" of the world, it won't be nearly as important to me as the current (or next) translation job.

True -- that is just my view.

I think for most non-homework KudoZ questions the answers will be used in jobs that the askers will deliver to clients, and I think that this is obvious to anyone participating in KudoZ. What right does an asker have to use an answer in a paid job? Fair usage? Public domain? Or royalty-free license?

Hi Samuel,

To me, it just makes a difference what kind of question it is. I am not very inclined anymore to give translations in KudoZ where a good feel for marketing or poetic/literary language is required. But as Neil said, nobody forces me.

Thanks for your input.
