Only one paper passed, is that of any use??? Apr 29, 2012

Hi there,
Just got my results yesterday for the 2012 exam, only passed general translation, and was wondering if that could be of any use to prove my skills level even if it was just for general translation?

thank you

Good preparatory course in Cardiff Apr 29, 2012

I also passed (Spanish>English) and I can thoroughly recommend the online preparatory course for this language pair run by Cardiff University's Centre for Lifelong Learning.

This gives you a Letter of Credit, which is a good result already. For next year's attempt, I would try to take a preparatory course allowing you to concentrate on the semi-specialised papers. It would be also worth to think what papers you think you'd enjoy most doing, not those that you think would mean more business. The best papers always those about things you enjoy knowing about.

As far as I have seen in my attempts and the people I have talked to over the years... the General paper is the one people find more difficult to pass. Ot at least those of us who work in specific fields of translation and rarely get a chance to translate media materials, literature, etc.

So all in all, congratulations!

Hola Tomas,

I’ll write back in English in case this could help any other newbie out there.

I have a media background, but since I moved to the UK several jobs as a translator for production companies have come up, and unexpectedly I have developed some kind of love for translation.
As a result, last year I decided to get some kind of accreditation in an attempt to increase my workload. I went for the IoL but later realised it had been the wrong choice, I didn’t research at all before paying the fee and hadn’t realised that having started to prepare in November meant I was heading for a complete disaster.

As I said I’m brand new in all this, and all the assignments I’ve done so far have come from companies that are unlikely to need my services anymore. This means that I’m now trying to step into the world of agencies. And hitting a brick wall as I don’t have references from other agencies, nor an accreditation. That’s why I was wondering if they would consider me for general translation jobs having a Letter of Credit from the IoL.

You seem to be very experience. Could you give me some advice? I’ve registered with tonnes of agencies; have also called dozens of them… all my hopes rested in obtaining the DIpTrans, and right now haven’t got a clue about what should I do!

Thank you very much!!!

Saludos desde Londres

Well done... Apr 30, 2012

If you have passed at least one module! I passed the exam last year and have since written to several agencies. A lot of agencies don't seem to reply at all - but the ones who did reply have been very professional and I feel confident that with their recommendations and my (translation and other) experience I will be able to build up my business further. Don't get discouraged when agencies don't reply - just keep at it. You know you are good enough - you have got your exam results to prove it. G... See more

Getting DipTrans results overseas May 2, 2012

Hi Geraldine,

As you probably know, there are plenty of people getting their results overseas. I'm receiving mine in Indonesia. It appears that the results were sent out last week. I don't know what postal service CIoL uses and the lady on the phone I spoke to wasn't very keen on explaining the details. The best we can do is to wait and see. I'll let you know as soon as I get mine. I think if we don't hear from them within 3 weeks, we should start making enquiries at CIOL.

I received my results today in Germany May 2, 2012

The waiting game is over for me. I have to resit the business section next year DE-EN. The examiners decided to throw in a very technical term in the business section which was nowhere to be found in any of the business dictionaries that I had. I guess the motto "be prepared for anything" really holds true when it comes to the DipTrans exam.

To my fellow translators who did not pass all their sections, all I can say is keep working. Many agencies do not require that you have this qualification and insist that you submit a sample translation to work for them whether you have this qualification or not. I have spoken to some agency owners in the past who have told me that having this qualificiation is not a guarantee that a person is a good translator and not passing all of the sections does not mean that you are a bad one either. So keep your chin up!

Granted, London-NY is a good route as far as mail service is concerned, but I was still positively surprised how fast the letter got here. A pass for me, thank goodness! Congratulations to those who passed, and good luck for the next attempt if it wasn't meant to be this year.

Has anyone ever failed 2 out of 3 ? What did you do? May 3, 2012

Wow! I'm so impressed by the amount of passes here - impressed and nervous. I've been kicking myself over a couple of mistakes i made in the exam and I need to be put out of my misery. I was wondering if anyone here had ever failed 2 out of 3 and what to do in that case. Financially it makes sense to pay for all three. Would you do all three again?

I would retake only these which I have failed May 3, 2012

Otherwise there would be a risk that I may fail paper which has already been passed.
