In the last couple of days, I've had 31(!!) visits from one and the same "not logged in" user - IP address in Beijing, China.

I can't imagine anyone from there being interested in contacting me for my German>English translation services (nor have I received any mails!)... but the question remains, why should they be so interested in my profile? Could someone be trying to find some way to use my identity for mean scams like the one posted by Rolf Kern yesterday?

To be on the safe side, I have already removed my CV (which was only available for logged in users, anyway) so that whoever it is cannot access my full name or address, or other personal details.

But has any one else had similar experiences? Am I just being silly and suspicious where I don't need to be?

Grateful for any thoughts on this!

Could be "crawler visits" Jun 3, 2012

See: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2064375/SpiderSpotting-When-A-Search-Engine-Robot-Or-Crawler-Visits

Surely some such visits are generated in China.

Crawler visits listed separately Jun 3, 2012

Hi Robert,

But these visits appear under "list by visitor", not "list crawler visits"... so could it still be crawler visits nonetheless?

The filters are not perfect Jun 3, 2012

Phoebe,

Yes, they could be, and most likely are just that. I, too, get a lot of spider visits from either the same IP addresses or a series of similar ones. When I first noticed this, I was also rather concerned. But I ran them through Google, and everything seems to suggest they are just spiders. The filters that separate visitors into genuine and crawler ones would need to be updated almost constantly to be able to sort them all correctly. Of course, no one can guarantee to you th

Of course, no one can guarantee to you that that's what it is, but I give it 98% or so Myself, I also started receiving a lot of Beijing visits in the recent days. If you would like, send me a message, and I will share the IP addresses with you so you can see if they are the same ones.

Best!

Filters are far from perfect Jun 4, 2012

I have impression that at the moment, the only search engine they filter out is Google. If visits were from China it could be for instance Bing.

Cheers

It seems like those visits are coming from a search engine crawler Jun 4, 2012

Hello all,

It seems like those visits are coming primarily from a search engine crawler, Phoebe, which is what goes out and 'spiders' the internet for pages to be searchable. The visitor you had those multiple visits from is actually MSN, Yahoo or Google.

So basically, no need for alarm, a machine is visiting your profile numerous times, not a human.
