on several occasions clients of both translation and interpreting assignments have paid me extra for the extra effort I made. It does not happen as often as I would like it to though...

Once was an unexpected gift at the end of a translation.

Several times recently, PMs have gone out of their way to get me a larger budget because they value my work. So it's during the negotiations, but it's still nice.

Flowers in appreciation. Huge arrangement worth twice the invoice of the job.

In full time employment, I once got paid three times my normal salary for coping with a disaster after the PR firm's computer crashed and we had to reconstitute the entire annual financial statements and management report section for the Board meeting the next day. I guess my editing skills, and "translation stamina" must have come to the fore on that occasion.

Once I was given some money by mistake, and I told the client immediately
The same client (my first client and who is still my client), once gave some extra money for the urgency, although our agreement did not include any extra for that.

On one occasion the customer (a large Swedish firm) paid me two cents over my word rate without providing any explanations, and once I helped a fellow translator out with a very urgent large job. She paid me my fee and transferred an additional 450 dollars as a thank you.

Very nice when something like that happens.
