What do you listen to when translating?

As I specialize in music, I am often under the impression of working twice when I translate and listen to classical music at the same time. Sometimes it's kind of schizophrenia - this week, for example, I listened to Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro while translating a text about contemporary music - nothing to do with Mozart, you know...

The blessed sound of silence... Jun 25, 2005

Which is so rare with an elderly mother in the house with a walking disability who craves to chat...

However, I have learnt to shut out all noises (TV blasting away, mom talking on the phone and the background noises of a city...).

When I am alone in the house and working... I can actually feel the silence and it's so precious to me...

I like to listen to Rokia Traore when I translate - but actually, I don't listen to her, I just play her music. And then, anything without vocal is fine since somebody's singing attracts my attention. And I need music when I work to isolate me from outside sounds.
