English to Russian: Scientists have discovered a new form of treatment for one of the most lethal childhood cancers General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Source text - English Scientists from Australia and the United States have discovered a new form of treatment for one of the most lethal childhood cancers.
They've found that some children with neuroblastoma can benefit from using another cancer drug in combination with chemotherapy, and could suffer fewer unpleasant side effects.
Survival rates for children with cancer can be as high as 80 per cent, according to Australian Children's Cancer Institute. But for those with neuroblastoma, the prognosis is not always so positive.
Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumour formed of embryonic ganglion cells.
Currently, a child diagnosed with neuroblastoma has only around 50 percent chance of survival (Australian Children's Cancer Institute).
It is a cancer of specialised nerve cells which normally occurs in the adrenal glands of the abdomen, and most commonly affects children under five.
But with remarkable progress being made by scientists in neuroblastoma research, more is understood about why children have so far not been responding well to treatment.
Professor Murray Norris of the Australian Children's Cancer Institute says this form of the disease is relatively rare, but particularly lethal.
If patients with neuroblastoma have multiple copies of a certain gene (known as MRP1), they're likely to suffer more seriously from the disease.
Norris says "with neuroblastoma, a child can have high levels of chemotherapy in their bloodstream, but not within the cancer cells. We believe a gene called MRP1 is acting like a vacuum cleaner, pumping the chemotherapy out of the cells - effectively making them drug resistant"
But now researchers at the Institute have discovered that there's a drug which can switch off this gene.
Researchers say that a previously known medication (4H10) in combination with chemotherapy treatment has had positive results in trials on mice with cancerous neuroblastoma cells.
This new combination of treatments has been able to entirely cure some of the animals - a massive step forward.
Professor Michelle Haber hopes the discovery could lead to groundbreaking improvements in treatment for children suffering from neuroblastoma cancers.
She says the drug combination has caused almost no side effects in trials so far, which could be good news for patients.
A team of 56 researchers at the Australian Children's Cancer Institute and the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia have joined forces on the study, and hope to have a clinical trial in place within a year.
