English to Ukrainian: Sociology General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English Cross-culturally, people's orientations to time, space, self and other vary considerably because of the languages they speak. Cultures, in fact, vary in their very assumption about the relationship between language and "reality": Words and thoughts are believed by the Navaho to actually create reality, whereas Europeans believe words and thoughts merely reflect an outside reality. Joseph Brodsky, exiled Soviet poet and winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize in literature, observed of his art: "What provides you with subject matter is your own language--and that's all. It sort of coils in your mind, that sort of thing, and dictates something to you. A writer is a tool of the language rather than the other way around."
English to Russian: Literature in Our Life General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Literature offers us the possibility to enter the world of imagination, and to leave apart the real one for a couple of hours. We come to meet kings and queens, époques many years ago, dream in the world of the rich or imagine how life will be in the future. It gives us the possibility to be another character in the story we read, to judge it from our perspective, to imagine the ending of it.
Russian to English: Medicine General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Pharmaceuticals
