Who is Spencer?
SPENCER MARSHALL is a 10-year-old boy living in an upscale suburban neighborhood with completely crazy parents. Spencer is the kind of kid who sees things as they really are… Without Spencer the other characters wouldn’t exist. He connects them all. Spencer is the central character of SPENCER’S SPOOKS; he’s the hub that connects the rest… Spencer is the eye of the hurricane.
His parents, DIRK and SALLY MARSHALL, have just bought a huge dilapidated mansion, and dragged poor Spencer into it. The neighbor kids think the house is haunted; their parents think it’s an eyesore. The lawn is overgrown, the bushes need trimming, and the shutters haven’t been painted in decades. Absolutely no one wanted the house, but Spencer’s parents think it’s just perfect the way it is.
What’s eating Spencer?
Spencer wants a normal life, with normal parents, like all the other kids. He knows he’s growing up with the wolves. Dirk and Sally are both loving and caring parents, but they’re still kids themselves. Spencer will have to make all the sensible choices himself.
As the Marshalls are wealthy, Dirk and Sally spoil Spencer with stupid things: a brand new Harley, even though he can’t see over the handlebars; a huge python, because Dirk thinks, “It’s cool to have a python, right?”… Not realizing of course that his son is bite-sized! Spencer wisely avoids their gifts.
What Spencer needs is a little guidance… and maybe a few friends. He’ll soon have both, but not how one might imagine.
What’s with Dirk and Sally?
Dirk Marshall was the furious heavy metal guitarist and lead singer for “SO DEAD”, a famous hard rock band a few years back. They had one hit: ‘Wake Up Baby I Crashed The Car’. Dirk’s rock career is now long over but no worries – Sally is the heiress to a tin can empire, so they have plenty of money
to waste… and boy do they waste the money: tricking-out their new Escalade - hearse style; throwing spectacular Halloween bashes in June!
Just to add to Spencer’s terror, Dirk and Sally are goths… meaning they’re fond of wearing leather and dark makeup, but worse they act like 15-year-old goths! They play all day, in short – they’re kind of nuts. It’s easy to imagine how Dirk and Sally can mortify poor Spencer: Dirk picks him up at school in the Escalade Hearse, with its white lace curtains – embroidered skull and crossbones of course, and a coffin full of CDs; Sally shows up Parents/Teachers Day in one of her famously outrageous groupie outfits; Dirk insists on composing the new school anthem – a heavy metal version.
Dirk is a happy child-man, and Sally looks up to him like the Rock God that he once was... Even after all these years they are still blissfully in love.
As their wealth allows them to spend recklessly the decision to buy a genuine “haunted” mansion to go along with their goth image was only a scribble in a checkbook away. Perhaps they should have thought twice.
Is Spencer a gosth?
Their son Spencer is not a goth, but he dresses in the gothic style since his mother still buys his clothes. She thinks it’s totally normal, and a perfect look for a boy like Spencer. Spencer has no choice but to go along with it.
What’s wrong with the mansion?
The mansion – called Villa Morta - is really a ruin. Dirk and Sally were told the house was haunted… but they’re actually ‘disappointed’ to discover that it’s not haunted as they never see a ghost. One day they decide to remodel the sprawling house, or at least part of it. While wandering in a forgotten wing of the enormous structure, Spencer meets a couple of ghost kids… there’s a whole family of ghosts living there. The house really is haunted!!
The ghost kids are: BUD (10) and his older sister PRISCILLA (12).
But these are no ordinary ghosts. They ‘live’ in a time warp. They are throwbacks to the Fifties. In their minds, Eisenhower is still the president, and the world is still a relatively safe place to live… Bud is a good kid. He reads Tom Swift, builds Estes rockets, and tries to think of new ways to help the nation. Priscilla helps her mother and admires her father.
Their ghost parents are HERB and ETHEL JOHNSON. Herb wears striped cardigans. Ethel bakes – constantly. They are a complete 1950’s family unit.
Why isn’t Spencer afraid of the ghosts?
Initially Spencer is afraid of Bud and Priscilla, but soon he is won over to their cause. His ghost friends help him with his homework, like history, and they have lots of fun together. Priscilla claims she will teach him a thing or two about girls! What’s to be afraid of…? At times Spencer will even forget they are ghosts. Soon he’ll talk Bud into coming to school with him! (NB: Bud and Priscilla do not attend school.)
Spencer is plunged into a family life that he has never known. He now has a kind of ghost brother and sister with parents - albeit ghosts - who do ‘normal parents things’, like reminding him to do his homework, or making him clean his room. It’s such a shock that Spencer loves it!!
Because Spencer’s real parents are such teenagers, he seeks advice from his ‘ghost parents’. Soon he is spending a lot of time with Bud and Priscilla, and why not? They think he’s great. Herb and Ethel are really sweet to Spencer.
They encourage him; they understand him - like real parents. And Bud and Priscilla are true friends.

Chi è Spencer?
SPENCER MARSHALL è un ragazzino di 10 anni che vive in una periferia chic con dei genitori completamente squinternati. Spencer è il tipo di bambino che vede le cose come realmente stanno… Senza Spencer gli altri personaggi non esisterebbero. È lui che li tiene tutti insieme. I suoi genitori, DIRK e SALLY MARSHALL, hanno appena comprato una grande casa che cade a pezzi e andandoci a vivere hanno portato con loro il povero Spencer. L’erba del prato è alta a dismisura, I cespugli andrebbero potati e le persiane della casa non sono state ridipinte da decenni. Assolutamente nessuno voleva quella casa, ma i genitori di Spencer pensano che sia perfetta così com’è.
Cosa muove Spencer?
Spencer vuole una vita normale, con genitori normali, come tutti gli altri bambini. Sa che sta crescendo in modo selvatico. Dirk e Sally sono entrambi genitori affettuosi e solerti, ma sono loro stessi ancora dei bambini. Starà quindi a Spencer stesso fare le scelte ragionevoli.
Poichè i Marshall sono benestanti, Dirk e Sally viziano Spencer con cose inutili: una Harley nuova di zecca, anche se lui non arriva a vedere oltre al manubrio; un pitone enorme, perché Dirk pensa: “forte avere un pitone, no?”… Non rendendosi conto certamente che suo figlio è esattamente della taglia giusta di un boccone del serpente! Spencer, saggiamente, evita I loro regali.
Ciò di cui ha bisogno Spencer è di una guida… e forse di qualche amico. E presto potrà avere tutti e due, ma non nel modo in cui si potrebbe immaginare.
Che tipi sono Dirk e Sally?
Dirk Marshall era lo scatenato chitarrista heavy metal e la voce principale dei “SO DEAD”, un gruppo di hard rock famoso qualche anno addietro. La band aveva fatto un pezzo famoso: “svegliati bimba ho schiantato la macchina”. La carriera rock di Dirk ha fatto ormai il suo tempo ma la cosa non è un problema – Sally è l’erede di un impero della lattina, e per questo sono pieni di soldi da buttar via… e lo fanno per davvero: Agghindando la loro nuova Escalade da carro funebre, facendo spettacolari baldorie per Halloween… ma nel mese di giugno!
E come ciliegina sulla torta, per aggiungere un po’ di disgusto a Spencer, Dirk e Sally sono dark/gotici… nel senso che vanno matti per i vestiti di pelle nera e per il trucco nero, ma ciò che è peggio è che agiscono come dei dark gotici quindicenni! Loro giocano tutto il giorno e per farla breve, sono un po’ picchiatelli. E' facile immaginare come Dirk e Sally possano mortificare il povero Spencer: Dirk va a prenderlo a scuola con quel catafalco di Escalade, combinata con le tende di pizzo, naturalmente con sopra ricamati teschi ed ossa, e una bara per porta CD; oppure Sally che arriva a scuola per il giorno del colloquio con i genitori agghindata con uno dei suoi famosi completi da groupie; o ancora Dirk che insiste per comporre lui il nuovo inno della scuola, naturalmente in versione “Metallara”.
Dirk è un uomo-bambino felice, e Sally continua a guardare a lui come se fosse ancora il Dio del rock di una volta... Anche dopo tutti questi anni loro sono ancora felicemente innamorati.
Poiché sono ricchi si possono permettere di spendere con noncuranza e la decisione di acquistare una vera e propria casa "degli spiriti" per essere in tono con la loro “Immagine Dark” per loro è solo uno scarabocchio in più sul libretto degli assegni. Forse sarebbe stato meglio pensarci due volte prima di farlo.
Spencer è anche lui un “Dark”?
Il loro figlio Spencer non è un dark, ma veste “stile dark” solo perché è ancora sua madre che compra gli abiti per lui. Lei infatti pensa che sia assolutamente normale, e che quello stile sia perfetto per un ragazzo come Spencer. Spencer quindi non ha altra scelta che quella di far buon viso a cattivo gioco.
Cosa c’è che non va nella villa?
La villa – che è chiamata Villa morta - è veramente cadente e in pessimo stato. A Dirk e Sally era stato detto che la casa era stregata… ma sono effettivamente rimasti male nel constatare che la casa non è per niente stregata e che lì non si vede nemmeno un fantasma. Un giorno decidono di rimettere in sesto quella villa cadente, o almeno una parte di essa. Mentre si aggira per un’ala dimenticata dell’enorme villa, Spencer incontra dapprima una coppia di bambini fantasma… per poi scoprire che c’è un’intera famiglia di fantasmi che vive lì. La casa è davvero stregata!!
I ragazzi fantasma sono: BUD (10 anni) e la sua sorella maggiore Priscilla (12 anni).
Ma questi non sono fantasmi normali. Essi “vivono” in una dimensione parallela. Nel loro “tempo parallelo” essi sono fermi agli anni cinquanta. Nelle loro menti, Eisenhower è ancora il presidente degli Stati Uniti, e il mondo è ancora un posto relativamente sicuro in cui vivere. Bud è un bravo ragazzo. Legge Tom SWIFT, costruisce modellini di aerei e di razzi e cerca di pensare a nuovi metodi per aiutare il suo Paese. Priscilla aiuta la sua mamma e ammira suo padre.
I loro genitori fantasma sono HERB ed ETHEL JOHNSON. Herb indossa cardigan rigati. Ethel passa tutto il suo tempo a sfornare torte. Sono una famiglia anni ’50 in tutto e per tutto.
Perché Spencer non ha paura del fantasmi?
Inizialmente Spencer ha paura di Bud e Priscilla, ma presto è conquistato alla loro causa. I suoi amici fantasmi lo aiutano nei compiti scolastici, ad esempio in storia, e si divertono molto insieme. Priscilla promette di insegnargli una o due cose sulle ragazze! Di cosa mai dovrebbe aver paura? A volte Spencer perfino si dimentica che loro sono dei fantasmi. Tanto da proporre a Bud di andare a suola con lui! (NB: Bud e Priscilla non frequentano la scuola.)
Spencer è immerso così in una vita familiare che egli non ha mai conosciuto. Egli ha ora una sorta di fratello fantasma e sorella fantasma con dei genitori i quali - sebbene fantasmi - fanno “cose normali da genitori normali” come ricordargli i suoi compiti o che deve riordinare la sua camera. È un tale shock per Spencer… e lui adora tutto ciò!!
Siccome i suoi veri genitori sono degli inguaribili adolescenti, Spencer cerca consiglio dai suoi “genitori fantasma”. In breve egli comincia a passare un sacco di tempo con Bud e Priscilla, e perché no? Visto che loro lo trovano davvero fantastico. Herb ed Ethel sono davvero dolci con Spencer. Essi lo incoraggiano; lo capiscono - come dei veri genitori. E Bud e Priscilla sono per lui dei veri amici.
