Source text - English When I was finding my voice as a writer in the thick of the sixties, Susan Sontag loomed large: she was among the relatively few literary intellectuals who were seriously trying to grapple with a new, rich, and, for many, disconcerting cultural situation. The title essay of her first collection, Against Interpretation, combined a formidable erudition bout the avant-garde with a manifesto-like plea that critics end their one-sided emphasis on teasing out the meaning of arte and embrace their pleasure in it. "What is important now", she wrote, "is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more...In place of a hermeneutics we need and erotics of art".

Il saggio che dà il titolo alla sua prima raccolta, Against Interpretation, univa una formidabile erudizione sull'avanguardia ad un appello, quasi un manifesto, ai critici perché la smettessero di focalizzarsi solo sul sezionare il significato dell'arte per condividerne il piacere. It was lined with blue silk as daintily as a lady’s work-basket, ornamented by a handsome page in the little seat behind, drawn by snow-white ponies in silver-plated harness and blue favors, and driven by a lovely young woman, whose costume of blue velvet and ermine completed the coquettish tout ensamble.

We drove in along I-95 without a map, took a wrong turn, found ourselves heading into Queens. As we crossed the Triboro Bridge Billie Holiday came on the radio to sing “Autumns in New York”. We remarked upon the coincidence.
The dog woke up as we wove through the streets. She planted her front paws on the seat beside me, perched there between us as though she knew what she hoped to see. We crossed into Manhattan over the Queensboro Bridge and made our way downtown along Second Avenue. Just past 5th Street my brother slammed on the brakes. The car behind us squealed.
Translation - Italian Splendida domenica il 28 ottobre, un giorno che si è rivelato essere il primo vero giorno di lutto: una giornata di silenzio. Siamo partiti presto e abbiamo guidato lungo la I-95 senza una cartina, abbiamo imboccato una strada sbagliata e ci siamo ritrovati diretti al Queens. Mentre attraversavamo il Triboro Bridge, alla radio Billie Holiday cantava “Autumn in New York”. Che coincidenza, ci siamo detti.
Gironzolando tra una strada e l’altra, il cane si è svegliato. Ha piantato le zampe anteriori sul sedile accanto al mio e si è appollaiata in mezzo a noi come se sapesse quello che sperava di vedere. Source text - English The self-portraiture in narrative portraiture is hardly uncommon, but Adam Phillips is uncommonly fortunate in this choice among his precursors since independence from, or playfulness with, precursors – refusing to comply with them is a way Winnicott liked to put it – is parte of the surface and of the depth of what Winnicott stands for. Two ways catch my attention in which Adam Phillips’s writing departs creatively from his sketch of Winnicott’s “playing off a language of common-sense against a language of professional expertise”: first, Phillips’s specification of the play of language as entering into “an ordinary language psychoanalysis”, in alluding to so-called ordinary language philosophy, is an invitation to think of psychoanalysis in connection with philosophy, specifically with the work of J.L. Austin and of the later Wittgenstein; second, Phillips’ own manner of writing is openly literary, suggesting a wish to play off not alone the ordinary against the technical but to keep in view the competition, as it were, insisted upon by Freud, between psychoanalysis and literature. I find this invitation to philosophy congenial and find this way of writing attractive, and I shall accordingly let these departures in Phillips’ Terrors and Experts guide my responses to those essays here.

Due cose in particolare hanno attratto la mia attenzione nello scritto di Adam Phillips quando si distacca creativamente dall’idea di “mettere a confronto un linguaggio basato sul buon senso con un linguaggio basato sulla perizia professionale” di Winnicott: la prima è il suo specificare che il linguaggio in quanto gioco rappresenta un ingresso alla “psicoanalisi del linguaggio ordinario”, alludendo in tal senso alla cosiddetta filosofia del linguaggio ordinario; un invito, quindi, a pensare alla psicoanalisi collegata alla filosofia, in particolare al lavoro di J.L. Austin e dell’ultimo Wittgenstein; la seconda è il suo modo di scrivere prettamente letterario, che suggerisce un desiderio di confrontare non solo l’ordinario col tecnico ma di mantenere viva la competizione tra psicoanalisi e letteratura, come aveva sottolineato Freud. Ritengo questo invito alla filosofia congeniale e questo modo di scrivere affascinante e sono d’accordo a far sì che queste idee di partenza nel testo di Phillips “Terrors and Experts” traccino la strada per le mie risposte ai suoi saggi in questa sede.
