English to Italian: Geertz: what was the third world revolution
Source text - English The central fact [he writes] is that we continue to live in a revolutionary age. The revolutionary impulse has been contaminated, corrupted, debased, demoralized; it has been appropriated by the enemies of socialism. All true. But the energy behind that revolutionary impulse remains. Now it bursts out in one part of the world, now in another. It cannot be suppressed entirely. Everywhere except in the United States, millions of human beings, certainly the majority of those with any degree of political articulateness, live for some kind of social change. The workers of Europe are consciously anti-capitalist, the populations of Asia and South America [and he might have added, the Middle East and Africa] anti-imperialist. These are the dominant energies of our time and whoever gains control of them, whether in legitimate or distorted forms, will triumph.
Translation - Italian L’assunto centrale [ scrive l’autore] è che noi continuiamo a vivere in un’epoca rivoluzionaria. L’impulso rivoluzionario è stato contaminato, corrotto, umiliato, demoralizzato, è stato fatto proprio dai nemici del socialismo. Tutto vero. English to Italian: Prone to Violence
Source text - English THE Bush Administration has argued that promoting democracy in the Islamic world, rogue states and China will enhance America's security, because tyranny breeds violence and democracies co-exist peacefully. But recent experience in Iraq and elsewhere reveals that the early stages of transitions to electoral politics have often been rife with violence.
These episodes are not just a speed bump on the road to the democratic peace. Instead, they reflect a fundamental problem with the Bush Administration's strategy of forced-pace democratization in countries that lack the political institutions needed to manage political competition. Without a coherent state grounded in a consensus on which citizens will exercise self-determination, unfettered electoral politics often gives rise to nationalism and violence at home and abroad.
Absent these preconditions, democracy is deformed, and transitions toward democracy revert to autocracy or generate chaos. Pushing countries too soon into competitive electoral politics not only risks stoking war, sectarianism and terrorism, but it also makes the future consolidation of democracy more difficult.
Translation - Italian L’amministrazione Bush ha sostenuto che il farsi promotore di Democrazia nel mondo Islamico, negli stati disonesti e in Cina migliorerebbe la sicurezza dell’America, poiché la tirannia genera violenza e le democrazie coesistono pacificamente. Tuttavia, la recente esperienza in Iraq ed altrove rivela che le fasi di transizione verso una politica elettorale sono state spesso ricolme di violenza.
Questi episodi non sono solo un rallentatore di velocità sulla strada verso la pace democratica. Invece,riflettono un problema fondamentale della strategia di democratizzazione forzata promossa dall’amministrazione Bush in paesi che mancano delle istituzioni politiche necessarie per amministrare la competizione politica. Senza una stato coerente, fondato su un consenso sul quale I cittadini eserciteranno la loro auto-determinazione, le politiche elettorali libere da legami danno spesso origine al nazionalismo e alla violenza interna ed esterna al paese.
In assenza di queste ondizioni necessarie, la democrazia è deformata, e le transizioni verso la democrazia subiscono una reversione verso l’autocrazia o generano caos. Spingere troppo presto i paesi verso una politica elettorale competitive non solo rischia di alimentare lo scoppio di una guerra, il settarismo e il terrorismo, ma rende anche più difficile il futuro consolidarsi della democrazia.
