Haemophilus influenza B vaccine study
Hib is an bacterium commonly found in the nasal cavity and pharynx. It may cause diseases like meningitis and pneumonia. It usually affects children below two years of age. Pneumonia or Hib vaccine is available against it. We want to study the success rate and duration of protection of this vaccine in Nepalese children. This vaccine was approved more than 10 years ago and it is considered to be very safe and effective. This vaccine is being used in more than 90 countries where the illness and death due to Hib has been found to be reduced significantly.

तर तपाईंले यो कुरा समाचारपत्र पढेर वा टेलीभिजन हेरेर वा आफ़्नो चिकित्सकको प्रतिक्षा कोठाको भित्ताका पोस्टरहरु पढेर कहिल्यै पनि थाहा पाउनुहुने छैन।
यस परिप्रेक्ष्यमा कुराहरु राख्दा, सन् १९८१ र १९८७ को बिचमा धनुषटंकारका ६२ वटा मामिलाहरु राष्ट्रियस्तरमा दर्ता गरिएका थिए, त्यसैले शायदै यसलाई एक महामारी भन्न सकिन्छ।

Translation - English Immunisation against tetanus
Tetanus can result from trivial or even unnoticed wounds, so up-to-date immunisation is the only protection.
But you would never know it from reading newspapers or watching television or perusing the posters on your doctor’s waiting-room wall.
To get things in perspective, there were 62 cases of tetanus reported nationally between 1981 and 1987, so it is hardly an epidemic.
But what is important is not the statistic but the potential for strong, healthy adults to die unnecessarily when tetanus is so easy to prevent.
Lockjaw, as tetanus is commonly called, is caused by a toxin produced by certain bacilli that grow in wound. It can affect people of any age and has an incubation period of from four to 21 days, through from seven to ten days is usual.
After that, muscle rigidity with increasingly painful spasms occurs. Death results from respiratory failure, high or low blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat. An unpleasant way to die, as anyone would agree.
Most people have been immunised when they were children, but a booster injection is needed every ten years to maintain immunity.
If you have never had a booster, you may need a full course of three injections over six months.
To be absolutely certain that you are safe, you need a tetanus shot whenever you incur a wound like one of those described above, if more than two years have passed since your last booster shot. Better be sure than sorry.

Translation - English After having your written consent, we will collect information about your child. When your child becomes 1 year old, we will do a simple/general blood test. After the test, your child will be given a free Hib vaccine which protects against Hib infection. After 1 month of vaccination, you have to bring your child for another simple blood test. At this time, we will provide a free chickenpox vaccine to your child.
After analysing the result of vaccination in your child, we want your consent to test vitamin D in the remaining blood sample. No additional sampling of blood is required for the test. The deficiency of vitamin D may cause infection of the chest. We want to test the vitamin D in the children participating in the study. This will give us an idea about deficiency of vitamin D in Nepalese children and may indicate the need for additional vitamin D. The study number will be removed from the blood samples and the researchers will not know its results.
What is done to the blood sample and record?
The blood samples will not have any names. Some blood will be kept in the hospital and some will be sent to the Oxford University in the UK for additional tests. The child’s name and records will only be available to the researchers.
