Many economists believe that output is usually measured by gross domestic product (GDP) and the most reliable indicator of the economy. It is important to note that an economic cycle in the phase of recovery is evident not in an increase in GDP, but paces of this increase.

During the past six years, the Household Products Division has achieved a great deal of success. We’ve enhanced our brands, increased our geographic footprint, gained share in household batteries, doubled our lighting products gross margin, doubled retail electronics sales as well as introduced external charging solutions for the on-the-go consumer. We have adopted lean thinking and tools across the organization. At the same time, we have dedicated resources to developing future innovation beyond our existing categories and products. Key to our success has been the ability to garner consumer insights, leverage those insights to increase our brand and product relevance and translate this into a category vision that resonated with our customers ahead of our competition.

Today, as some of you may be feeling, we are again facing a time of change just as we did in 2002 when devices, consumers, customers, and competition changed our category – changes that we leveraged for our advantage. In order to better understand the impacts of the current changing environment, earlier this year we launched “Project 2020” which was designed to more clearly understand these changes and determine how we should redefine our strategies and priorities in order to achieve success in the coming years.

A key component of this project was a global, cross-functional team that met for eight days to discuss the changing situation and its impact on our “core” business of household batteries and, ultimately, on the division.

Overall, the team:

1. Acknowledged that we’ve been successful in the past when we embraced change to lead and shape the future.
2. Pointed out that our strategic choices drive many of the activities in the business and some of our current choices are driving excessive complexity and costs.
3. Recognized there are opportunities for growth in the future, but the sources of growth will look different than the past.
4. Understood that this growth is likely to require redeployment of resources into new areas and cost reductions to fund our new opportunities.

Given the importance of the core household battery business, the team spent a great deal of time developing their recommendations for this segment. The team found that there is a significant difference between how Developed and Developing Markets will impact our business in the future.

In Developed Markets – markets with mature and highly developed economies – we will not achieve historic levels of growth as primary powered devices decline due to the prevalence of battery on board. This, in turn, is likely to lead to consumers being less engaged with the category and our customers reassessing their category strategy – some of which we are already seeing. The opportunity for Energizer, based on our understanding of the new reality, is to capitalize on these changes by developing a go-to-market plan which resonates with consumers and our customers and translates into a simplified business model for everything we do, regardless of geographic or functional area. This will, we believe, create a more competitive position for us around the world.

In Developing and Emerging Markets, including Strategic Markets such as Brazil, China and Russia, there will be significant population and GDP growth that will drive an increase in basic device ownership which we believe will lead to an expansion of primary battery consumption allowing us to leverage our existing assets. While these markets offer clear opportunities for volume growth, the pricing structure is very different from our large, developed markets and will require unique approaches, products and special focus.

Based on the recommendation of the team, we are moving into the next phase of Project 2020 which will define our specific strategies and actions for the division. This phase of the project consists of ten work streams and, when combined with the work being done in the core segments of Lighting Products and Specialty Power, will form the foundation for our future. The work streams will be focused on:

As you can imagine, there is a great deal of work ahead as part of Project 2020 and the majority of that work is just beginning. As these work streams are launched, you will undoubtedly be hearing more about Project 2020 and, in fact, you may be called upon to support the project either directly or indirectly. We appreciate your support and enthusiasm as we work to define our path forward to lead and shape the future of our division.

This work is based on months of analysis which led us to believe that there are fundamental changes in consumers, customers, competitors and the category – shifts that are real, are impactful and necessitate us making changes in our business strategies, plans and processes.
