Source text - English In the third of his series of articles on the finest wines in the world, Richard Woodard describes how the perfect growing conditions of the Château Pétrus vineyards has created a world-famous Bordeaux wine whose best vintages can cost thousands.
Fifty or so years ago, if you’d asked a wine connoisseur for their opinion of Château Pétrus, there’s a good chance they would have responded: ‘Château where?’ Even now, it would be easy to drive straight past the unassuming building on the D121 road in Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s right bank, that is the home of this celebrated red wine – more comfortable farmhouse than grand, imposing château.
Pétrus’ rise to stardom over the past few decades has been stratospherically fast, driving the emergence of Pomerol in its wake – previously regarded rather condescendingly as a lesser satellite in the shadow of nearby St-Emilion.
In the old days, Pétrus was sometimes a hard sell, but, today, a bottle of the legendary 1945 vintage will set you back several thousand pounds – if you can find one. A case of the 2000 millennium vintage fetched $72,600 at a New York auction in November 2010.
Cynics would suggest that the secret of Pétrus’ success lies at least partly in the size of its vineyards: these cover only 11.4 hectares – tiny by Bordeaux standards – and, until more land was bought in 1969, the estate was scarcely bigger than six hectares. That means only about 30,000 bottles of Pétrus are produced each year, but, while the quantity of wine available may inflate the price tag, you don’t acquire the kind of stellar reputation Pétrus enjoys without being pretty darn good.
If this remarkable wine has one single secret, it lies as so often with great wines in the soil. The vineyards sit on the ‘Pétrus boutonnière’ or ‘buttonhole’ – an apparently insignificant mound scarcely 40m above sea level. The views may not be panoramic, but that slight elevation is enough to make the Pétrus soils free-draining – always crucial to the production of fine wine. What’s more, those soils are predominantly blue clay, acknowledged as the perfect growing medium for great Merlot, along with an iron-rich subsoil known as ‘crasse de fer'.
Other vineyards in the area also have blue clay and crasse de fer, it’s true, but only at Pétrus does the synergy between the two create the pitch-perfect conditions for really great wine. Of course, the vines (nearly all Merlot) are crucial, too: on average, they’re close to 50 years old, meaning production is relatively low, yielding juice that is both concentrated and complex – aided by human intervention to restrict the harvest still further.
The size of the vineyard means the harvest can be gathered in within a couple of days and, if the morning dew takes a while to evaporate, technology takes a hand: just now and again a helicopter is used to give the vines an impromptu dry with its rotors. How much difference does such attention to detail make to the wine in your glass? It’s hard to say, but, when you’re producing a wine with the status of Pétrus, nothing is left to chance.
