Parceiros do projecto europeu AGRICOMAC estiveram reunidos no Funchal
O comité técnico do projecto AGRICOMAC esteve reunido, na manhã de ontem, na sede da Associação de Agricultores da Madeira, um dia após à primeira reunião anual deste projecto que sucede o Germobanco.
Estiveram reunidos 17 quadros directivos ligados às entidades que integram este projecto europeu, no âmbito da agricultura, que da parte da Região conta com a presença da Universidade da Madeira e a Associação de Agricultores, para além de elementos das instituições representativas dos Açores e das ilhas Canárias.
Em cima da mesa estiveram vários pontos importantes nesta fase inicial do projecto que tem por objectivo multiplicar sementes para serem fornecidas, com grande qualidade, aos agricultores para efeitos agrícolas. Na prática, visa a transferência de tecnologia ao sector agrícola da Macaronésia.
De salientar que o Banco de Germoplasma ISOPlexis, organismo que se encontra inserido no Centro de Estudos da Macaronésia da UMa, contém cerca de duas mil amostras de sementes, a grande maioria regionais. As leguminosas constituem 36 por cento da colecção, os cereais 32%, as plantas hortícolas 22% e os outros 5% dizem respeito às plantas silvestres.
E a Madeira irá continuar o trabalho iniciado no anterior quadro comunitário, com o Germobanco, complementando a parte «das sementes do milho, do trigo, da cebola e do feijão, trabalhos estes que vínhamos a fazer», explicou o presidente da Associação de Agricultores, João Ferreira. O propósito é chegar ao final destas culturas para que a Associação e a Universidade da Madeira, detentoras do Germobanco Agrícola da Madeira, procedam à multiplicação destas sementes e plantas para serem depois fornecidas aos agricultores e numa fase posterior procederem à sua certificação para implementar quer no consumo em fresco, quer em produtos transformados. «Estamos a falar num rejuvenescer das produções agrícolas, com produtos antigos, não melhorados geneticamente, mas de selecção, e lançar produtos no mercado que os mais antigos se lembram do paladar, mas que deixaram de estar na moda».
A ideia de João Ferreira é apostar na qualidade dos produtos para venda no mercado especializado, ou seja, gourmet, «dirigida mais ao público que quer consumir um produto diferentee que não existe em mais parte nenhuma do mundo, mas que para isso é capaz de pagar duas ou três vezes mais o seu valor». «Só assim é que conseguimos valorizar o produto e só assim é que o pequeno agricultor consegue ver o seu trabalho compensado financeiramente», explicou.
João Ferreira espera que, se tudo correr bem, no final deste ano serão feitas as primeiras experiências directas com os agricultores com as sementes de trigo, «levando a cabo tudo o que temos dito e feito ao longo destes anos».
Durante a tarde de ontem, os representantes das várias entidades da Macaronésia visitaram o Germobanco, na Universidade da Madeira.

Partners in the European project, AGRICOMAC, met in Funchal
Project AGRICOMAC’s technical committee gathered at the headquarters of Madeira’s Association of Farmers yesterday morning, the day after its first annual meeting. The project is taking the place of Germobanco.
17 board members from entities in the European agricultural sector, the University of Madeira, Association of Agriculturists, and representative institutions from the Azores and Canary Islands all gathered.
The project’s objective is to propagate high quality seeds to be supplied to farmers for agricultural purposes and there were various important issues on the table having to do with its initial phase. In practice, AGRICOMAC aims to bring technology to Macaronesia’s agricultural sector.
Of importance is the fact that ISOPlexis Germplasm Bank, an organization within the Center for Macaronesian Studies at the University of Madrid (UMa), contains close to two thousand, mostly regional, seed specimen. Legumes constitute 36% of the collection, grains 32%, vegetables 22% and the other 5% are wild plants.
President of the Association of Farmers, João Ferreira, explained that with “corn, wheat, onion, and bean seeds, these works we’ve been doing,” Madeira will continue what was started in the last community network. The purpose is to bring these community networks to an end so that the Association and UMa, proprietors of the Germplasm Bank of Madeira, proceed with the propagation of seeds and plants to be subsequently supplied to farmers and at a later stage to become certified for consumption- either fresh or in a processed products. “We’re talking about a rejuvenation of agricultural production, with old products that have been culled and not genetically modified, about launching products on the market that the oldest will remember from taste, but that had gone out of style.”
The idea that João Ferreira is betting on is the quality of the products for sale in a specialized, or gourmet, market, “directed toward the public that wants to consume a new product not available anywhere else in the world, but that is also capable of paying two or three times the price. Only then can we add value to the product and only then can the small farmer see his/her work financially compensated,” he explained.
João Ferreira hopes that if all goes well, farmers will have their first direct experiences with the wheat seeds at the end of this year, “bringing to fruition all we have said and done over the years.”
The representatives from the various Macaronesian entities visited Germobanco at the University of Madeira yesterday afternoon.
