Chapter 1. "It is a Known fact that I was born..."
There was much commotion in the Einstein household in the southern German town of Ulm that Friday in 1879. It was March 14, and a baby boy had been born in the house on Bahnhofstrasse earlier that day. The Parents, Pauline and Hermann, were elated. The jovial and easygoing Hermann, wearing his pince-nez eyeglasses and sporting a mustache, looked down adoringly at his young wife and the newborn resting in bed, and, like all fathers, felt full of hope for a good life for the little boy, his first child. The parents' only concern was that the baby's head was unusually large and angular, and Mrs. Einstein was afraid it signaled a birth defect. The doctor assured her that all would be well, and, sure enough, in time the shape of his head looked normal. Pauline and Hermann named their new baby "Albert."
When the Einsteins were first married in 1876, they had lived in the even smaller town of Buchau, 30 miles southwest of Ulm, in the state of Wṻrttemberg in southern Germany. Hermann's family had lived there since at least the 1750s, while Pauline's came from a town some 50 miles farther northwest of Ulm in Cannstatt near the large city of Stuttgart. On the day of their wedding, Pauline was 18 and Hermann was 29. Although both were of Jewish origin, they were not particularly attached to Jewish religious traditions. Instead of observing the Jewish custom of naming a child after a beloved relative, they used only the first letter of the grandfather's name, Abraham, perhaps as a statement of their assimilation into the broader society. But they retained the deep respect for education and humanitarianism that had been common among Jewish families worldwide for centuries.
