1 What is radiation therapy?
2 Radiation therapy the treatment of cancer using high energy waves or streams of particles called radiation to kill cancer cells and stop them from spreading. It is also called radiotherapy.
3 How does radiation therapy work?
4 Radiation therapy aims specifically at tumors or areas of the body where disease is. Radiation in high doses kills cells or keeps them from growing and dividing. Because cancer cells grow and divide more rapidly than most of the normal cells around them, radiation therapy can successfully treat many kinds of cancer.
5 How is radiation therapy given?
6 Radiation therapy can be external or internal. When a machine outside the body aims radiation at cancer cells it is called external beam therapy. And when the radiation is put inside the body or near the cancer cells it is called internal therapy.
7 What are the benefits of radiation therapy?
8 Radiation therapy is a local treatment as it affects the cancer cells only in a specific area of the body posing little risk to normal cells. It can be used to treat many kinds of cancer in almost any part of the body.
9 Radiation therapy can be given as adjuvant therapy, for a treatment that is added to and given after the primary therapy. It can also be given for palliation i.e., when a patient cannot be cured, radiation therapy can be used to shrink tumors and reduce pressure, pain, and other symptoms of cancer.

২ ক্যান্সার রোগের চিকিৎসার জন্য বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করা হয় যাতে রেডিয়েশন্ নামক উচ্চশক্তি সম্পন্ন প্রবাহ ব্যবহৃত হয়, যা ক্যান্সার কোষগুলিকে মেরে ফেলে এবং তাদের ছড়িয়ে পড়া রোধ করে, এই পদ্ধতিকে রেডিয়োথেরাপি ও বলে।
৩ বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি কি ভাবে কাজ করে?
৪ বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি বিশেষত ‘আব’ (টিউমার) অথবা শরীরের সেই অংশকে প্রভাবিত করে যেখানে রোগটি উপস্থিত। উচ্চমাত্রার বিকিরণ কোষগুলিকে মেরে ফেলে অথবা তাদের বিভাজন ও বৃদ্ধি রোধ করে। ক্যান্সার কোষগুলি যেহেতু স্বাভাবিক কোষ অপেক্ষা অনেক দ্রূত বাড়ে এবং বিভাজিত হয় সেই হেতু বিভিন্ন প্রকার ক্যান্সার রোগ যথাযোগ্য রূপে সারাতে সক্ষম হয়।
৫ বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি কিভাবে প্রয়োগ করা হয়?
৬ বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি বাহ্যিক ও আব্ভন্তরীন এই দুই প্রকারেই ব্যবহৃত হয়। বিকিরণ পদ্ধতি যখন শরীরের বাইরে থেকে ক্যান্সার কোষের উপর প্রয়োগ করা হয় তাকে বলা হয় বাহ্যিক বিকিরণ প্রণালী এবং এই বিকিরণ যখন শরীরের মধ্যে বা ক্যান্সার কোষের কাছে প্রয়োগ করা হয় তাকে বলা হয় আব্ভন্তরীন বিকিরণ প্রণালী।
৭ বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতির উপকারিতা কি?
৮ যেহেতু বিকিরণ চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি শুধুমাত্র নিরদিষ্ট স্থানের ক্যান্সার কোষ গুলিকেই প্রভাবিত করে সেইহেতু অন্যান্য স্বাভাবিক কোষের কোন ক্ষতি হয় না। শরীরের প্রায় যে কোন স্থানেই এই পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করা যায়।
৯ প্রাথমিক চিকিৎসার পরবর্তী বা সংযোজক চিকিৎসা হিসাবেও এর ব্যবহার আছে। যে সব ক্ষেত্রে রোগী নিরাময় করা ক্ষমতার বাইরে চলে যায়, সেই সব ক্ষেত্রে এই পদ্ধতিটি উপশমকারক প্রণালী হিসাবেও ব্যবহৃত হয়, যেমন ‘আব’-এর ক্ষেত্র সংকোচন, চাপ বা ব্যাথা কমানো ইত্যাদি ক্যান্সার রোগের অন্যান্য উপসর্গ গুলি রোধ করা।
