I've lived in Indonesia for 17 years and understand the nuances of the local language. I am fluent in both written and spoken Indonesian, which are in many ways two different languages.
I believe in translation that conveys the essence of what it meant, as in most instances it is impossible to translate ideas and statements created within the framework of Indonesian conceptual thinking on a "word for word" basis. I do, however, strive to retain the spirit and intent of the original author. I have over seven years experience translating documents for NGOs and donors and have translated intellectual and political writing as well.
My experience outside of translating has included working with the Indonesian government, working with Indonesian national NGOs and at the grass-roots level in communities. I have an academic background in anthropology, which serves me well in understanding and articulating the subtleties of this culturally diverse country. |
