English to Indonesian: Determining Your Rates

If you are a freelance translator, putting yourself in a position to do high quality work on an ongoing basis requires that you approach the job from an effective commercial standpoint. While the question "What rates should I charge?" is one that ultimately only you can answer, as a professional in the industry -- and an independent business owner -- you must be sure to address the question carefully. When you do, bear in mind the responsibility we all have to cooperate in creating an environment in which it is possible for translators who take the time to do high quality work, can be paid an amount that allows them to dedicate themselves to their work on an ongoing basis.

Kreativitas Melalui Pemanfaatan Teknologi

This December will mark the fifteenth year of Intel in Indonesia. This year also commemorates forty years since Intel produced its first ever microprocessor.

During that time, much has been done by Intel in Indonesia. In general, there are three main points that has been achieved by Intel Indonesia over fifteen years which are strategic collaborations with the government and related institutions, technology for education, and creativity through utilization of technology.

Strategic Collaboration with the Government and Related Institutions

In 2009, the Intel Indonesia Corporation worked with KADIN (The Chamber for Commerce and Industry), in becoming the host for the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructure investment seminar for broadband, health, and education issues.

One year later, this collaboration formulated the new roadmap for ICT which was then handed over to the government. At the end of 2010, Intel won the tender for the Directorate General for Taxes and the Ministry of Finance in providing four thousand one hundred (4,100) computers for one hundread fifty (150) Tax Service Offices.

Technology for Education

In Indonesia, through the "Intel Tech" program, Intel has trained a total of seventy-five thousand (75,000) teachers from cities throughout Indonesia until the end of 2011. Together with HP and supported by the KGI (Indonesian Teachers Club), it was possible to commence the procurement of thirteen thousand (13,000) laptops for teachers in 18 districts in the Regency of Kutai Kartanegara.

Other than that, together with PT. Telkom Indonesia, Intel donated 300 Classmate PCs (CMPC) which were included with wireless broadband access (Speedy Broadband Internet) to ten schools in four cities in Indonesia (Pekalongan, Tangerang, Solo, and Jambi).

Intel also holds the Intel ISEF, the largest competition on global knowledge for students of grade 9 to 12. The Indonesian winners will then be sent to Intel in the United States to participate in the International ISEF competition.

Creativity Through Utilization of Technology

In 2010, Intel Indonesia conducted the "Intel Creative Motion" program which consisted of a series of training sessions for creative and education communities in five cities: Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan, Balikpapan, and Makassar.

Intel Indonesia in 2011 introduced the "Color Your Life" movement, an effort to inspire people on how to enjoy using computers in life. The movement also involved two creative practitioners, Jogja Jip Hop Foundation and Nancy Margried, which combines the elements of culture and modernization.

Bio
Hi all!

I am Indonesian, born in Bandung in 1977. At the age of five, my family moved to the US, Lexington, Kentucky to be exact, which we lived for six and a half years. I went to the local public school, Glendover Elementary, until the 6th grade when we finally moved back to Indonesia and lived in Jakarta for two years before moving once again to Bandung where I spent Middle School, High School, and the university at. I hold a Civil Engineer BSc degree from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

One year from graduating from ITB, I moved to Jakarta for my first job as an engineer at a technical consultant company, a subsidiary of a major Japanese company. During my five years working there, apart from conducting engineering work, I tasted my first official job as a translator (English to Indonesian and vice versa). Because of the many clients which were international companies, the reports were required to be made in Indonesian and also English, where my skills were put to place. Ever since then, there would be various translation jobs whether from inside the company or freelancing from other clients.

Now I am a Project Integration Management Senior Engineer in a major state-owned mining company and currently hold a PMP (Project Management Professional) certificate which is issued internationally by the PMI (Project Management Institue) in the US. Since starting work for my current company, I have ceased to work on translations because of the lack of jobs available and the time to search for them. Since finding out about ProZ.com, I find it a place where I can reopen my freelance translation business.

I am still waiting for my first job, but I assure you that I would bring out the fullest of my competence and experience in translating from English to Indonesian and vice versa. It is a job I enjoy doing and something that my peers and superiors have been dependent upon on me... and also some praises regarding the results, I might add.
