Komandan Pasukan Amerika Serikat (AS) di Pasifik Laksamana Timothy J Keating menyampaikan apresiasi yang besar atas kontribusi pemerintah Indonesia di dalam operasi penjagaan perdamaian di berbagai wilayah dunia, termasuk di Lebanon dan Afrika. AS juga berkomitmen untuk memperkuat kerja sama militernya dengan Indonesia, termasuk di bidang pertukaran perwira maupun aktivitas latihan militer bersama.

Keating berpendapat keterlibatan dalam berbagai operasi penjagaan perdamaian di berbagai belahan dunia merupakan komitmen signifikan militer Indonesia. Dalam Kurang dari sepuluh tahun lalu RI dan AS hanya terlibat program pertukaran personel dan latihan gabungan tidak lebih dari satu lusin. Menurut Keating, kunjungan ke Indonesia pekan ini yang merupakan kedua kalinya sejak ia menjabat tahun 2007 sangat penting untuk menggarisbawahi signifikansi kerjasama militer Indonesia-AS. "Ada kerjasama sangat baik antara Komando Pasifik AS dengan Indonesia," ujar pria asal Dayton, Ohio, lulusan US Naval Academy pada 1971.

Diungkapkan, Komando Pasifik AS berkomitmen membantu Indonesia untuk meningkatkan keamanan maritim. AS akan membantu Indonesia dalam berbagai cara. Peningkatan keamanan maritim adalah operasi yang sangat strategis dan secara taktis sangat penting bagi AS. "Segala cara yang dapat kami lakukan akan ditempuh untuk meningkatkan keamanan maritim di kawasan Indonesia," kata Keating.

Ia yakin, Komando Pasifik AS dapat membantu Indonesia dalam menciptakan keamanan maritim, termasuk dengan meningkatkan kerjasama dan pertukaran informasi maupun saling pertukaran latihan. Indonesia punya kepentingan besar untuk menciptakan keamanan maritim.

Indonesia-US Increases Military Cooperation

The United States (US) Troops Commander in the Pacific, Admiral Timothy J Keating, has expressed his deep appreciation to the Indonesian government for their contribution in peacekeeping operations in various parts of the world, including in Lebanon and Africa. The US is also committed to strengthening military cooperation with Indonesia, including in the areas of officer exchanges and combined military training activities.

Keating is of the opinion that involvement in various peacekeeping operations in various parts of the world represents the significant commitment of the Indonesian military. Over the last ten years Indonesia and the US have only been involved in personnel exchange and joint exercise programs no more than a dozen times. “Throughout 2008 we will carry out at least 125 personnel exchange and joint exercise programs. So these opportunities are increasing significantly. Improvements are not only quantitative, but also qualitative in that we also want to share technological advances with TNI,” said Keating.

According to Keating, his visit to Indonesia this week, which is his second visit since taking office in 2007, is very important to emphasize the significance of Indonesia-US military cooperation. “Cooperation between the US Pacific Command and Indonesia is very good”, said Keating from Dayton, Ohio, who graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1971.

He said that the US Pacific Command is committed to helping Indonesia improve maritime security. The US will help Indonesia in various ways. Improving maritime security is a very strategic operation that tactically is very important for the US. “We will do everything we can to improve maritime security in the Indonesian region,” said Keating.

He is convinced the US Pacific Command can help Indonesia in creating maritime security by, amongst other things, improving cooperation and the exchange of information and training. Indonesia has a strong interest in creating maritime security.
