Source text - English Over the course of many years, without making any great fuss about it, the authorities in New York disabled most of the control buttons that once operated pedestrian-crossing lights in the city. Computerised timers, they had decided, almost always worked better. By 2004, fewer than 750 of 3,250 such buttons remained functional. The city government did not, however, take the disabled buttons away—beckoning countless fingers to futile pressing.
Initially, the buttons survived because of the cost of removing them. But it turned out that even inoperative buttons serve a purpose. Pedestrians who press a button are less likely to cross before the green man appears, says Tal Oron-Gilad of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in Israel. Having studied behaviour at crossings, she notes that people more readily obey a system which purports to heed their input.
Inoperative buttons produce placebo effects of this sort because people like an impression of control over systems they are using, says Eytan Adar, an expert on human-computer interaction at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr Adar notes that his students commonly design software with a clickable “save” button that has no role other than to reassure those users who are unaware that their keystrokes are saved automatically anyway. Think of it, he says, as a touch of benevolent deception to counter the inherent coldness of the machine world.
That is one view. But, at road crossings at least, placebo buttons may also have a darker side. Ralf Risser, head of FACTUM, a Viennese institute that studies psychological factors in traffic systems, reckons that pedestrians’ awareness of their existence, and consequent resentment at the deception, now outweighs the benefits.

Source text - English Boom times are back in Silicon Valley. Office parks along Highway 101 are once again adorned with the insignia of hopeful start-ups. Rents are soaring, as is the demand for fancy vacation homes in resort towns like Lake Tahoe, a sign of fortunes being amassed. The Bay Area was the birthplace of the semiconductor industry and the computer and internet companies that have grown up in its wake. Its wizards provided many of the marvels that make the world feel futuristic, from touch-screen phones to the instantaneous searching of great libraries to the power to pilot a drone thousands of miles away. The revival in its business activity since 2010 suggests progress is motoring on.
So it may come as a surprise that some in Silicon Valley think the place is stagnant, and that the rate of innovation has been slackening for decades. Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal, and the first outside investor in Facebook, says that innovation in America is “somewhere between dire straits and dead”. Engineers in all sorts of areas share similar feelings of disappointment. And a small but growing group of economists reckon the economic impact of the innovations of today may pale in comparison with those of the past.

Across the board, innovations fueled by cheap processing power are taking off. Computers are beginning to understand natural language. People are controlling video games through body movement alone—a technology that may soon find application in much of the business world. Three-dimensional printing is capable of churning out an increasingly complex array of objects, and may soon move on to human tissues and other organic material.
An innovation pessimist could dismiss this as “jam tomorrow”. But the idea that technology-led growth must either continue unabated or steadily decline, rather than ebbing and flowing, is at odds with history. Chad Syverson of the University of Chicago points out that productivity growth during the age of electrification was lumpy. Growth was slow during a period of important electrical innovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; then it surged.

Source text - English What is the purpose of XtraMath?
XtraMath helps students transition from counting or calculating the basic math facts to recalling them. Recalling math facts instead of calculating them frees up mental resources for higher-level operations.
XtraMath uses timed activities to encourage students to answer the questions as quickly as possible combined with spaced repetition to efficiently develop recall. The three-second threshold is carefully selected to be long enough to type in a recalled answer but not long enough for the student to comfortably enter a counted or calculated answer.
Students should have already learned the basic counting or calculating strategies and be able to solve the problems without time pressure before starting to practice an operation on XtraMath.

To her surprise, it had come to mind repeatedly throughout her long trip in the vilayet of Monastir from the town of Monastir to Korcha, after she heard that nightingale singing so beautifully in the dark in a lone chestnut tree. She had actually stopped her horse to listen to it for a while. “The saying must be about the nightingale,” she had thought for a moment before kicking her horse’s belly gently, making her lope along at an easy pace. The saying was clearly wise. But why was she thinking that it had anything to do with her? She tried hard to figure it out but she could not put her finger on it. She knew she was groping in the dark. She tried to give some tentative answers to the question. What was the thing she desired the most? CHARGING THE BATTERY
1. Connect the small plug of the USB cable into the USB
Receptacle . on the bottom of the camera; connect the
opposite end into an available USB port of your computer.
2. While the computer is on, the battery will charge as indicated by the Charging Indicator Light.
3. The light will remain on during the entire charge cycle and will extinguish when charging is complete.
4. Typical charge times will vary between 2 and 4 hours,
depending upon the amount of pictures and length of time of all videos that have been recorded.
NOTE: It is not necessary to run the battery down completely before recharging. The built-in Lithium-ion battery will charge to its full working capacity regardless of it state of depletion.
This will considerably reduce recharge time.
TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF
1. On the camera’s top left control panel locate the Power Button and press it once. The camera turns on and displays the screen shown here.
2. After 4 seconds, the startup screen will disappear, and the camera will display live video.
3. To power the camera off, press the Power Button.
RECORDING VIDEOS
1. Insert a flash memory card into the Memory Card Slot.
2. Press the Power Button

1. Remove base from the packaging and place onto an even surface.
2. Attach the two outer springs to the lamp.
3. Take the lamp and place it onto the base, ensuring it is fully seated.
4. Screw in the locating grub screw using the Allen key provided.
5. Screw in the bulb.
6. Plug the product in and turn it on using the inline switch.
ADJUSTMENT
Your Anglepoise is a finely balanced product. To adjust the lamp, place on a level surface as a sloping surface will upset the balance. If necessary, carefully tighten the nuts until the shade and arms support themselves in any position. To avoid damage caused by excessive force, please take care with the movement range and characteristics of your product. It is also advisable to allow the shade to cool before adjustment or repositioning.
MAINTENANCE
Prior to cleaning or maintenance, always switch off and disconnect from the electricity supply and allow the shade to cool. Repairs and the replacement of damaged cables should only be carried out by Anglepoise Ltd, or an authorized representative.
Your product should only be used in a dry indoor environment.
It is essential that any replacement bulb does not exceed the maximum wattage indicated inside the shade.
