Source text - Hebrew בְּעִיר הַהֲרֵגָה קוּם לֵךְ לְךָ אֶל עִיר הַהֲרֵגָה וּבָאתָ אֶל-הַחֲצֵרוֹת, וּבְעֵינֶיךָ תִרְאֶה וּבְיָדְךָ תְמַשֵּׁשׁ עַל-הַגְּדֵרוֹת וְעַל הָעֵצִים וְעַל הָאֲבָנִים וְעַל-גַּבֵּי טִיחַ הַכְּתָלִים אֶת-הַדָּם הַקָּרוּשׁ וְאֶת-הַמֹּחַ הַנִּקְשֶׁה שֶׁל-הַחֲלָלִים. וּבָאתָ מִשָּׁם אֶל-הֶחֳרָבוֹת וּפָסַחְתָּ עַל-הַפְּרָצִים וְעָבַרְתָּ עַל-הַכְּתָלִים הַנְּקוּבִים וְעַל הַתַּנּוּרִים הַנִּתָּצִים, בִּמְקוֹם הֶעֱמִיק קִרְקַר הַמַּפָּץ, הִרְחִיב הִגְדִּיל הַחוֹרִים, מַחֲשֹׂף הָאֶבֶן הַשְּׁחֹרָה וְעָרוֹת הַלְּבֵנָה הַשְּׂרוּפָה, וְהֵם נִרְאִים כְּפֵיוֹת פְּתוּחִים שֶׁל-פְּצָעִים אֲנוּשִׁים וּשְׁחֹרִים אֲשֶׁר אֵין לָהֶם תַּקָּנָה עוֹד וְלֹא-תְהִי לָהֶם תְּרוּפָה, וְטָבְעוּ רַגְלֶיךָ בְּנוֹצוֹת וְהִתְנַגְּפוּ עַל תִּלֵּי-תִלִּים שֶׁל-שִׁבְרֵי שְׁבָרִים וּרְסִיסֵי רְסִיסִים וּתְבוּסַת סְפָרִים וּגְוִילִים, כִּלְיוֹן עֲמַל לֹא-אֱנוֹשׁ וּפְרִי מִשְׁנֶה עֲבוֹדַת פָּרֶךְ; וְלֹא-תַעֲמֹד עַל-הַהֶרֶס וְעָבַרְתָּ מִשָּׁם הַדָּרֶךְ – וְלִבְלְבוּ הַשִּׁטִּים לְנֶגְדְּךָ וְזָלְפוּ בְאַפְּךָ בְּשָׂמִים, וְצִיצֵיהֶן חֶצְיָם נוֹצוֹת וְרֵיחָן כְּרֵיחַ דָּמִים; וְעַל-אַפְּךָ וְעַל-חֲמָתְךָ תָּבִיא קְטָרְתָּן הַזָּרָה אֶת-עֶדְנַת הָאָבִיב בִּלְבָבְךָ – וְלֹא-תְהִי לְךָ לְזָרָא; וּבְרִבֲבוֹת חִצֵּי זָהָב יְפַלַּח הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ כְּבֵדְךָ וְשֶׁבַע קַרְנַיִם מִכָּל-רְסִיס זְכוּכִית תִּשְׂמַחְנָה לְאֵידְךָ, כִּי-קָרָא אֲדֹנָי לָאָבִיב וְלַטֶּבַח גַּם-יָחַד: הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ זָרְחָה, הַשִּׁטָּה פָּרְחָה וְהַשּׁוֹחֵט שָׁחַט. וּבָרָחְתָּ וּבָאתָ אֶל-חָצֵר, וְהֶחָצֵר גַּל בּוֹ – עַל הַגַּל הַזֶּה נֶעֶרְפוּ שְׁנַיִם: יְהוּדִי וְכַלְבּוֹ. קַרְדֹּם אֶחָד עֲרָפָם וְאֶל-אַשְׁפָּה אַחַת הוּטָלוּ וּבְעֵרֶב דָּם שְׁנֵיהֶם יְחַטְטוּ חֲזִירִים וְיִתְגּוֹלָלוּ; מָחָר יֵרֵד גֶּשֶׁם וּסְחָפוֹ אֶל-אַחַד נַחֲלֵי הַבָּתוֹת – וְלֹא-יִצְעַק עוֹד הַדָּם מִן הַשְּׁפָכִים וְהָאַשְׁפָּתוֹת, כִּי בִּתְהֹם רַבָּה יֹאבַד אוֹ-יַשְׁקְ נַעֲצוּץ לִרְוָיָה – וְהַכֹּל יִהְיֶה כְּאָיִן, וְהַכֹּל יָשׁוּב כְּלֹא-הָיָה. וְאֶל עֲלִיּוֹת הַגַּגֹּות תְּטַפֵּס וְנִצַּבְתְּ שָׁם בָּעֲלָטָה – עוֹד אֵימַת מַר הַמָּוֶת בַּמַּאֲפֵל הַדּוֹמֵם שָׁטָה; וּמִכָּל-הַחוֹרִים הָעֲמוּמִים וּמִתּוֹךְ צִלְלֵי הַזָּוִיּוֹת עֵינַיִם, רְאֵה, עֵינַיִם דּוּמָם אֵלֶיךָ צוֹפִיּוֹת. רוּחוֹת הַ"קְּדוֹשִׁים" הֵן, נְשָׁמוֹת עוֹטְיוֹת וְשׁוֹמֵמוֹת, אֶל-זָוִית אַחַת תַּחַת כִּפַּת הַגַּג הִצְטַמְצְמוּ – וְדוֹמֵמוֹת. כַּאן מְצָאָן הַקַּרְדֹּם וְאֶל-הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה תָּבֹאנָה לַחְתֹּם פֹּה בְּמֶבָּטֵי עֵינֵיהֶן בַּפַּעַם הָאַחֲרוֹנָה אֶת כָּל-צַעַר מוֹתָן הַתָּפֵל וְאֶת כָּל-תַּאֲלַת חַיֵּיהֶן, וְהִתְרַפְּקוּ פֹּה זָעוֹת וַחֲרֵדוֹת, וְיַחְדָּו מִמַּחֲבוֹאֵיהֶן דּוּמָם תּוֹבְעוֹת עֶלְבּוֹנָן וְעֵינֵיהֶן שׁוֹאֲלוֹת: לָמָּה? – אֱמֹר אַתָּה, בֶּן אָדָם! אוֹ טוֹב מִזֶּה – שְׁתֹק! וְדוּמָם הֱיֵה עֵדִי, כִּי-מְצָאתַנִי בִקְלוֹנִי וַתִּרְאֵנִי בְּיוֹם אֵידִי; וּכְשׁוּבְךָ אֶל-בְּנֵי עַמֶּךָ – אַל-תָּשׁוּב אֲלֵיהֶם רֵיקָם, כִּי מוּסַר כְּלִמָּתִי תִּשָּׂא וְהוֹרַדְתּוֹ עַל-קָדְקֳדָם, וּמִכְּאֵבִי תִּקַּח עִמְּךָ וַהֲשֵׁבוֹתוֹ אֶל-חֵיקָם. וּפָנִיתָ לָלֶכֶת מֵעִם קִבְרוֹת הַמֵּתִים, וְעִכְּבָה רֶגַע אֶחָד אֶת-עֵינֶיךָ רְפִידַת הַדֶּשֶׁא מִסָּבִיב, וְהַדֶּשֶׁא רַךְ וְרָטֹב, כַּאֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה בִּתְחִלַּת הָאָבִיב: נִצָּנֵי הַמָּוֶת וַחֲצִיר קְבָרִים אַתָּה רוֹאֶה בְעֵינֶיךָ; וְתָלַשְׁתָּ מֵהֶם מְלֹא הַכַּף וְהִשְׁלַכְתָּם לַאֲחוֹרֶיךָ, לֵאמֹר: חָצִיר תָּלוּשׁ הָעָם – וְאִם-יֵשׁ לַתָּלוּשׁ תִּקְוָה? And thou will comest thence to the ruins and pass over the split walls And thou will comest to the cracked walls and shattered hearths, To the place of depth broken by hammers, made those holes wider, The exposed burnt black bricks and charred stones, And they look like open mouths of brutal wounds and darkened That will not mend and have no known cure, There will thy feet in feathers sink and stumble on wreckage doubly wrecked Of fragments of fragments and pieces of pieces and defeated scrolls and manuscripts, Destructive inhumanly work and secondary fruit of thy labor; Pause not upon this havoc and go thy way- The perfumes will be wafted from the acacia bud And half its blossoms feathers and its spray the smell of blood; And against thine anger, in spite of thee, strange incense they will bring All the beauty of the spring in thy heart and it shall not disgust thee; The thousand golden arrows of the sun will segment thy liver And seven rays of broken glass over thy sorrow joyously will pass. For God called the spring and slaughter together: The sun shone, the blossom burst and the slaughter slew. And flee and come to the courtyard, and in the yard a mound- On this mound two were beheaded: a Jew and his hound. The self-same axe struck both and upon the self-same garbage heap both were flung And in the mixing blood, the two’s blood will be muddled up by pigs; Tomorrow the rains shall come and wash the combined blood into the desolate valleys- And the blood will crieth out no more from the sewers and gutters, Because it will descendeth into the deep or water the thorns till sedated – And all will be as it was, and all will return as though not. And unto the attic mount go and stand in darkness- Still fearful bitter death floats in silent shadows; There in the dismal corner and there in the shadowy nook Eyes, look, eyes silently watching thee. The spirits of the martyrs they are, soul reprimanded and sorrowful, Gathered into one corner shrunken- and silent. Here the hatchet found them and hither they do come To seal with their glance for the final time The agony of their pointless death and their accursed lives, And huddled here wraiths and terrified, in hiding as one Silently pleading their shame and their eyes ask: why?- And who but God in the land can bear this silence? Lift thine eyes to the roof –its rafters are also silent, Causing darkness upon thee and are silent, and askest the mouths of the spiders; Living witnesses they be, and they shall tell thee all that has been: The tale of cloven belly, feather-filled, A tale of nostrils and nails, of skulls and hammers, A tale of human beings slaughtered hung from beams, And a tale of a babe beside its stabbed mother As he sleepeth and his mouth still holdeth a nipple of a cold breast; And a tale of a boy torn in half and his soul left as he crieth, “Mother!”- And his eyes are here too, demanding an account from me. And heap tale on tale the lizard will, recount Tales that do puncture the brain and there is in them to sever Thy spirit and soul from thee forever – And thou shall restraint, and choke in thy throat thy cry And bury in the depths of thy heart before the outburst, And leap from there and exit- and the habits of the land are as they were, And the sun, as yesterday and the day before, spilling its brilliance on the earth. And thou will descend from there and come into the darkened cellar, There the virgin daughters of thy folk were fouled, Where seven, seven heathens flung themselves on woman after woman, The daughter in the presence of mother and the mother in the presence of daughter, Before the slaughter, during the slaughter and after the slaughter; And thou will touch with thy hand the stained cushion and incarnadined pillow, This place were wild boars lay and horsemen mate On the boiling blood dripping axes hot in their hands. And seest do seest: In that same darkened corner, Under those benches of destruction and behind that casket, Lie husbands, grooms, brothers, peering through the cracks At the fluttering of holy bodies under the flesh of asses, Smothered by the filth and sucking in their own blood, And as one shares the portion of his meat thus shared the goys their flesh- They lay in their shame and watched – but did not move nor change position And they did not pierce their eyes nor lose their mind And perhaps each man then prayed in his heart: O Lord, a miracle- and let not the evil come upon me. And those that survived their pollution and awoke from the bloodshed Unclean for life and the light of their world will be tainted Unclean of the world, tainted flesh and soul, from without and within – Everlasting abomination corporeal and soul defilement from within and without And their husbands crawled out of their holes and ran to the house of the Lord And blessed the miracles in God’s name their trusted savior; And the Cohanim amongst them will go and ask of their rabbi: “Rabbi, my wife, what is she? Allowed or forbidden?” – And all shall return to the way it was, and all shall be as it was. And now goest and I shall bring thee to all their hiding places: Lavatory houses, pigsties and other filth-ridden places, And thou shall see with thine eyes these hiding places Where thy neighbors and the heirs of the Maccabees, Scions of lions that in “Father of Pity” and the seed of saints, Twenty souls in one hole and thirty thirty, And they shall raise my honor in the world and bless my name in plenty… The flight of mice they fled and the hiding of fleas they hid, And their death they died like dogs there as they were found, And in tomorrow’s morning – and the fugitive son exiteth And findeth there his father’s corpse honoured and condemned --- And why does thou criest, son of man, and why wrappest Thy face in thy hand? – Grindest thy teeth and be miserable! And thou shall descend into the city and there thou shall find a garden of herbs, And a big barn in the garden, a stable of death. And as a camp of owls and host of bats The dead stretched out drunk on blood and worn. There on the floor of the barn the tumbrel wheels lie spread Their open spokes, like fingers put forth to murder, And their hubs like mouths covered human blood and brain. And the day draweth towards evening, the sun tilteth westward, Cloaked clouds of blood and waist-coated with flaming fire, And thou openest the gate stealthily and comest to that stable, And fearful darkness shall swallow thee, and the void ambient of horror: Fear, fear all around… wandering in the barn, Hovering on its wall and subjugate in the silence. And under the pile of wheels, from the rifts and crevasses, Thou canst still feel as though the flutter of crushed limbs, Moving a hub wheel, a spoke that is hung about their backs, In death-throes they contort and are wasting in their own blood; And a last clandestine sigh - a weak tortured voice Above thy head still hangs as though congealed And like contaminated sorrow, infinite sorrow, sparks there and shivers. It is nothing else save a contrite spirit much afflicted and tribulation-tried Which closeth itself off into this prison house, Stuck here in eternal pain and wills not to part from it, And one black Shechenah, grief weary and forespent, Wavering here at every corner and findeth not her rest, Desireth to weep – and caneth not, wisheth to roar – and is dumb, Silence rots in her mourning and in secret she is smothered, Spreading forth her wings unto the shadows of the martyr’d dead and her head under her wing, Darkening her tears and her weeping is without speech --- And thou also thou, son of man, shut the gate upon thee, And be cloth’d here in the darkness and in the ground thou will buryest thy gaze And tarry there and unitest with the sorrow And fillest in it in thy heart until the end of thy life, And on that day emptyest thy soul and losest all strength – And it will be for thee an escape and stream of poison, Lying in thee like a curse and ambush thee like an evil spirit. Haunting and pressing on thee like a nightmare; And in thy bosom carry it to the four winds of heaven, And seekest and thou will not find it utterable. And out of the city go and come to the burial ground, Let that none will see thee and alone thou goest there, Visit the graves of saints from the least to the greatest of them, And stand on their fresh turned soil and I command upon thee silence; And thy heart will be oppressed sorrow and affliction- And I stop thine eyes and neither shall there be a tear, And knowest that it is time to bellow like a bound oxen tied to an alter And I shall harden thy heart and there will come no sigh. Here are the slaughtered calves, here they all lie – And if there is payment for their death- tell, with what shall they be paid? Forgive me, ye shamed of the earth, your god is as poor as ye, Poor he is in your life and poor still in your death, For ye wilt come on the morrow for your pay and beat on my doors – I shall open them for you, come and see: I am fallen from my high estate! And the pain is great and very great the infamy – And which of the two is greater? – tell me, son of man! Or better still – be silent! and in silence bear witness, Because thou found me in the day of my calamity and saw my sorrows; And when thou returnest to thy people - Do not return to them empty handed, For the mark of my dishonor carry forth and bring it down upon their heads, And my pain take with thee and returnest it to their hearts. And thou shuttest thine eyes from their image, and I take thee and return thee From the cemetery to thy brothers that have survived the slaughter, And come with them that day of fasting to the houses of prayer And hearest their broken cries and be carried with their tears; And the house is filled wailing, weeping and wild sighs, And the hairs of thy flesh shall rise and fear will call thee and thou shall tremble- That is the way a lost, lost nation will sigh… And into their hearts look- a dreary wasteland, And there will grow fury’s vengeance- but let no seed live there, And not one grievous curse wilt be born on their lips. Are their wounds not faithful- then why are their prayers false? Why deny me on their day of trial, and what is the benefit of this refutation? And see also see: they are still rotting in their sorrow, All drowning in tears, singing lamentation amongst themselves, And then they batter on their breasts and confess their inequity To say: “We are to blame, we have betrayed” – And their hearts believe not their lips. Will the split nerve sin and will the broken porcelain be blamed? And why is it they implore me? – Speak to them and bid that they rage! Lift up their fists against me and demand their retribution on their shame, The shame of all generations from creation till the end, And break the sky and my chair with their fist. And also thee, son of man, don’t separate from within the herd, Believe their plagued hearts and not their litanies; And when raiseth the cantor his voice: “Do for the slaughtered! Do for the babes! Do for the suckling!” And the pillars of the house shall crack with the sorrowful cry, And the hairs of thy flesh shall rise and fear wilt call thee and shake- And I will be cruel to thee- and thou shall not bellow with their weeping, And thy outcry – I shall put to death between thy teeth; And they endure their tragedy alone – and thou will not assoil. The curse shall stand for generations – a curse till times remote, And thy tear treasured tear unshed, And build upon her a wall of steel and a fort of copper Of deadly hate, hell’s hatred and stopped up anger, And it shall hold thy heart and grow there like an asp in its lair, Feeding thee from it and it from thee and peace shall not find thee; And thou starved it and willst not satisfy its thirst – and thou shall destroy its fort And with venomous head to freedom send it And on the people that thou passest and pity on a thunderous day command it upon them. Now go from here and return at twilight And see the nation’s mourning: and here all these souls That have feared and awoke in the morning – return with evening to sleep Worn from weeping and afflicted in spirit they stand now in the darkness, Still moving their lips, praying – but the heart is empty of content, And without a spark of hope in the heart and without luster in the eye The hand gropes in the darkness, asks support – and shall find none… Thus will smoke the wick as its oil has been used up, Thus will pull the old horse whose strength fails it. Would that misfortune had left them some small solace, Restoring their life, nourishing their old age! Behold the fast is ended, the final prayers said- and why Is the public still uneasy? – Did they also read the Book of Lamentations? No! It is a preacher rising to the stage, Now he openeth his mouth, mumbling and stuttering his words, Intemperate mortar and whispereth verse on their fresh wounds, And not one word from God will save his mouth, And not one small spark will be inflamed in their hearts; And the flock of God stands with its old and its young, Those hearing and yawning and those nodding their head; The mark of death on their foreheads and their hearts are smitten in destruction. Their spirit dead, they have dried up, and their god has left them. And thou also do not nod to them, don’t shock their wounds without cause, Don’t pour more troubles into their full cup; Wherever thy finger strays – there an incurable wound it findeth, All their flesh upon them is pain- but these are ancient pains And will make peace with lives shame-filled, and what shall avail thou consoling them? Too pathetic are they for thine anger and too lost for thy pity; Leave them and they shall go- Now the stars have come out, And the mourners and their covered heads and the shame of thieves Man man with his empty soul returneth to his home,251 240 And his back more bent than before and his soul more empty than it was And man man with his sorrowful heart will enter his bed And the rust on his bones and the rot in his heart… And as thou risest tomorrow and goest by way of the highway And thou seest the mass of broken people groaning and sighing, Gathering at the doors of the wealthy and camping in their doorways, Exclaiming in public about their wounds like the peddlers in the markets, To whom the crushed skull and to whom the injured and bruised hand, And they all put out a dark hand and expose broken arms, And their eyes, the eyes of beaten slaves, unto the hands of the wealthy, To say: “A crushed skull I have, my ‘holy’ father, - give me my reward!” And the wealthy sons of sympathy fill with compassion for them And from within hand them a stick and a backpack for the skull, Saying “good riddance” – and the beggars are consoled. And dig up the bones of your forefathers And the bones of your holy brothers and ye will fill your packs And bear them on your shoulders and go your way, ye will Barter and trade them at all the country fairs; And ye showed your hands on the main roads, to the sight of all, And spread them to the sun on your filth ridden rags, And sing upon them with raucous voice your pauper’s song. And ye call for the sympathy of the nations and ye pray for compassion of goys, And as ye committed crimes so ye will beg, and as ye shnorred so ye will shnor And now what dost thou here, son of man, rise, flee desertward And carry with thee the cup of sorrow, And tear there thy soul into ten pieces And thy heart give to impotent rage, And thy large tear let fall there on the rock’s face And thy loud and bitter cry send – and it will be lost in the storm.

Although I have never worked directly in translation, I was a medical interpreter for Affordable Language Services and found that I sincerely enjoyed the linguist juggle. Also, though I work mostly in literature and poetics, I am interested in any kind of work, in any field, for I am knowledge thirsty.
