Share Sale and Purchase Agreement
The agreement effectuated transfer of shares in a company operating an oil refinery, pipelines and import/export terminal. The translation was performed by two translators including myself, and I handled the earlier part of the agreement.
This document wasn’t an ordinary one, as the closing of the deal occurred at a certain time after the execution of the agreement. Therefore, the terms of the transaction were dependent upon circumstances that may or may not arise within that window period. For example, the purchase price was influenced by the company’s working capital on the closing date. The agreement also prescribed rules of business conduct for the company for the time between agreement execution and final closing, at the same time providing for changes in the balance sheet due to effects of ongoing operation. The document included covenants to cause antitrust filings pursuant to European Union’s Merger Regulations, an environmental release of Seller by Buyer, instructions involving escrow and brokerage accounts.
I also supervised continuity of headings in the table of contents and throughout the entire document.
The turnaround time was 48 hours, and my part was 9,000 words. Delivery was on time.

Corporate Cell Phone Service Agreements with Russia's Largest Providers
It was a huge project involving service agreements and invoices between a Russian branch of an American corporation and Russia's largest cell phone service providers. A strong attention to detail was required, as miniscule yet important changes were hidden within what seemed to be repeat information. At the first stages of the project, the agency tested speed and quality of translation by requiring me to deliver a substantial part of the assignment within 16 hours from its acceptance. I successfully met this challenge. I went on to exceed the agency's expectations of dependability by delivering the whole project 1 day ahead of schedule.

Court documents for internationally famous case of RUSSIAN ANIMATED FILM STUDIOS
It was the highlight of my legal translation career so far. I translated court applications, judgments, orders, appeals and motions for one of the most interesting international court cases of the recent times. The case was reviewed by multiple courts in Russia, the US and the European Court of Human Rights simultaneously, with miscellaneous multi-national parties filing endless counter-claims against one another. Even a U.S. District Court was forced to comment on what it held as an unfair decision of the Russian Supreme Arbitration.
As I have a law background myself, it was thrilling to delve into all of this.
One of the documents (Memorandum and Order from a US District Court Judge) was 7,480 words when translated and was completed over the course of a weekend making the outsourcer extremely happy.

Overview
The Administration is committed to ensuring that every child can read by the third grade. To help meet this goal, a new program will be established known as the "Reading First" initiative.
The Reading First initiative gives states both the funds and the tools they need to eliminate the reading deficit. The findings of years of scientific research on reading are now available, and application of this research to the classroom is now possible for all schools in America. The National Reading Panel issued a report in April 2000 after reviewing 100,000 studies on how students learn to read. The panel concluded:
"...effective reading instruction includes teaching children to break apart and manipulate the sounds in words (phonemic awareness), teaching them that these sounds are represented by letters of the alphabet which can then be blended together to form words (phonics), having them practice what they have learned by reading aloud with guidance and feedback (guided oral reading), and applying reading comprehension strategies to guide and improve reading comprehension."

Source text - English Terms of payment are NET 30 from date of Invoice. Past due accounts will be subject to a 2% per month service charge from the date of the Invoice. 2.2 An agreement will have been entered into after the client accepts, either verbally or in writing, a quotation issued by XYZ, or if XYZ sends written confirmation of an assignment issued by the client. Written acceptance or confirmation is understood to include an acceptance or confirmation sent fax and/or e-mail.
2.3 XYZ will, in principle, confirm an assignment in writing. Failure to send confirmation will not imply that the agreement has not been entered into.

Introduction
1) Purpose and Scope of this Policy
There is international agreement that ethical standards must be set for research involving human embryos. The current US Administration has stated its positions in two publications written by The President’s Council of Bioethics. These are: “Human Cloning and Human Dignity” (July 2002) and “Reproduction and Responsibility: the Regulation of New Biotechnologies” (March 2004) (www.bioethics.gov).
2) The Policy
a) No research funded by XYZ will attempt to conceive a child.
b) Embryos created using research funded by XYZ, including embryos created using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), or parthenogenesis, or any other technology, will not be transferred into a woman’s uterus.
c) Embryos created using research funded by XYZ, including embryos created using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) or parthenogenesis or any other technology, will not be transferred into the body of any member of a non-human species.
d) XYZ prohibits the production of a hybrid human-animal embryo by fertilization of human egg by animal sperm or of an animal egg by human sperm.
e) XYZ prohibits the use of any human embryo in research that developed beyond 14 days.
f) XYZ prohibits the buying or selling of human embryos.

Source text - Russian И вдруг … 26 апреля что-то случилось в Чернобыле! Что именно, удавалось по крупицам воссоздать с помощью моих друзей и коллег, работавших в области атомных технологий. Первым в Белоруссии забил тревогу директор Института ядерной энергетики (в Соснах) Нестеренко Василий Борисович. Говорил он не то, чего от него ожидали «властители», а то, что он сам знал и понимал. Так активно бил тревогу, что простить ему этого не смогли и … сняли с работы. Но многое и многим он помог понять. Первое «странное» сообщение появилось в печати 3 мая. Это было обычной полуправдой: что-то было сказано, но так, чтобы никто и ничего не смог понять. Без той «дополнительной» информации и я бы ничего не смог понять.
Почувствовал, что мое участие в чернобыльских работах может быть полезным. Взыграло чувство патриотизма. Послал на имя М.С.Горбачева письмо с просьбой направить меня в Чернобыль. Никакого эффекта. Пишу в Минатомэнергопром. Еду в Москву, уговариваю, прошу. Вежливый ответ: «Будем иметь в виду. Понадобитесь, вызовем.» Словно на курорт просился. Потом до меня дошло: слишком во многом мне удалось уже разобраться, и они это почувствовали. Не нужны были им люди, пытающиеся разобраться в случившемся. Но это дошло уже потом. А тогда я всеми силами пытался убедить их, что нужен там. Видимо, чтобы отделаться, попросили прислать анкету и автобиографию. Все, как на духу, описал, послал. И опять осечка. Translation - English And then it was April 26, and something was happening in Chernobyl... I was slowly reconstructing the events based on what my friends and colleagues from the nuclear technology field had information on. Vasily Nesterenko, the Director of the Nuclear Energy Institute in Sosny, was the first one to fly a warning around Belarus. He wasn’t speaking from the authorities’ standpoint. He was simply reporting his understanding of his own observations. He was so desperately trying to deliver a wake-up call to the nation that he was soon removed from his position. Nevertheless, he gave plenty of information to many people. The newspapers printed the first hint on May 3. It was the half-truth everyone was so accustomed to. Something was being said, and no one could understand what that ‘something’ was. I wouldn’t have been able to understand a thing if not for some exclusive information.
I thought that I should help out at the Chernobyl site. It was a patriotic feeling. I sent a letter to Mikhail Gorbachev asking to be dispatched to Chernobyl. There was no response. Then I wrote the Ministry of Nuclear Energy Production. I went to Moscow and personally begged the officials for a permission to go to Chernobyl. Their answer was a polite one, ‘We’ll keep you in mind. We’ll call if we need you.’ I wasn’t asking for a free stay at a sea resort! I later realized that I had come across as a person with extra knowledge. They didn’t need anyone too curious. But the understanding of that came later. At that moment I was trying hard to convince the authorities I could be helpful. They asked me to complete a form and write up a bio just to get rid of me. I answered all the questions so honestly, wrote so many details. And yet another failure. Why was I telling the truth? And again no response. I went to Moscow one more time. I was again talking them into my plan.
