Bio

Translating your technical texts into clear and
concise English

German-English, Czech-English

Background

German
started as a side interest for me as I pursued a degree that focused mostly on
math and engineering. That led to a year abroad in Hamburg, which in turn led
to a few years of teaching in what was then Czechoslovakia. After a master’s
degree in the US and another stint at the secondary school in Litomerice, I
eventually started a language services company that catered to the industries
in Northern Bohemia. This was followed by 5 years managing the family tree-care
company in Oregon, after which I again returned to the Czech Republic, this
time settling down as a freelance translator.

Subject
matter and clients

I have focused
on automotive and mechanical engineering translations since 2011.  Main end customers include Volkswagen, BMW and
ZF Friedrichshafen. The subject matter over that time period has evolved with
the automotive industry. Gasoline has turned to batteries, the independent driver
is now highly networked, and software has become as important as hardware. The range
of subjects involved reflects the reach of the companies in question: from HR
training materials and press releases to materials testing reports and logistics
standards.

What can
I do for you?

Technical
translations require clarity and accuracy, even if they may be missing from the
source text. To achieve that, I adhere to prescribed terminology and style
guides, focus on consistency, consult the customer when needed, and do no small
amount of research. The translated text should be at least as good as the
original, and, in many cases, better since the translation process can function
as an additional level of editing.
