The Minister of transport stood behind the podium and stared at the sea of faces and flashing cameras that stared back at him in anticipation. Nothing he had ever experienced could prepare him for this. None of his training could have prepared him for this. How do
you tell the world that a commercial jetliner has simply vanished into thin air? How do you tell the world that despite the ground breaking technology in aviation you’re unable to locate the so-called vanished jetliner?

As a kid I kept thinking the insurance man was my father. Not that I knew him mind (I only met him the once), but I heard him often enough. I can remember my mother’s voice pleading with him. Was it over money? We weren’t poor, although my father – my real father that is – was dead. He had been a diplomat, so he didn’t exactly leave us destitute. But I got it into my head that my mother hadn’t the money to pay the insurance man and he sought payment in other ways. I should say at this stage that my mother was an uncommonly beautiful woman. Everyone’s mother is beautiful I know in the eyes of her offspring, but Mam’s beauty was universally acknowledged. When in her prime, her bright blue eyes and svelte figure attracted many suitors which, apart from the insurance man, included medical students, members of the corps diplomatique and even an IRA man. The last mentioned was a friend of her older brother, Tomás.

The bay is similar to countless other bays in Greece: deep blue water, a pebble beach and lazy tourists who splash in the warm water. From my chair I have a great view and I wonder why this bay is yet different somehow. I have been working in this bar for two months now, but I still haven’t figured it out. Is the sunlight different? Is the magic that lingers between the land and the sea different? Or have I simply lost my mind, like the poet Sappho who jumped of a cliff in ancient antiquity? They say it was a fathomless lovelorn that drove her to her insane deed. I think it was the heat.

I feel how the sun burns my skin. It’s still early morning, but the heat creeps up from the cliff behind me, towards the sea. It’s going to be an airless, stifling hot day.

Sofia approaches. The fierce morning sun shines on her black dress, tanned legs and her hair, still wet from the shower. Moaning, she parks her large behind next to me. I know she won’t say much for the next half hour, so I make her a yoghurt with fresh fruits and a glass of frappé. After ten minutes of chewing and drinking her brain slowly starts to function again.

My name is Jenny Wemlert Tacchino. I am Swedish but for the past thirteen years I have been living and working in Italy, which has allowed me to acquire a flawless Italian and an excellent vocabulary. Moreover I have been working for many years in the UK. My extended stay in England consolidated my excellent English skills which I have since perfected through university studies.

I am currently working on two ongoing, long term translation projects within the Travel & Tourism business, translating travel articles as well as hotel related documents and real estate ads. Contemporaneously I am taking on temporary translation projects in a wide range of subjects, collaborating with a large number of translation agencies from all over the world.

I have also got experience from literary translation, having translated the novel "Peeling Oranges" by James Lawless as well as a number of short stories. I’m passionate about writing and I am currently working on my third novel.
