אף כי הממצאים נחשפו בחלקם כבר בשנות השלושים של המאה העשרים, לקח כחמישים שנה עד שהם התקבלו במחקר. בחקר התקופות הקדומות שהתפתח באירופה היה מקובל כי בתקופה הפליאוליתית התיכונה התקיימו רק ניאנדרטלים, לכן החוקרים שיערו שהאדם המודרני הופיע לראשונה לפני ארבעים אלף שנה, בתקופה הפליאוליתית העליונה. אולם מהתמונה המשתקפת מהממצאים בארץ ישראל עולה כי האדם המודרני הקדום קדם באזור זה לאדם הניאנדרטלי.
יש חוקרים שאף טענו כי באותו זמן התקיימו במקביל שני מיני אדם, על פי הדמיון - ולעתים אף הזהות - בין תרבותם החומרית של שני המינים, היא התרבות המוסטרית. טכנולוגיית הסיתות של כלי צור ותוצריהם דומים בשתי החברות, וכך גם אופן קבורת המתים והמנחות שהונחו בקברים. חוקרים אחרים, שבחנו את השלדים שנחשפו בארץ, מצאו כי קבוצת ההומו ספיינס המקומית היא בעלת מאפיינים שניתן לכנותם ניאנדרטליים, ובהם שלד מעובה, ואילו בקבוצת הניאנדרטלים אין אפילו שלד אחד שכולל את מלוא התכונות המורפולוגיות שהתגלו בשלדים ניאנדרטליים שנחשפו באירופה.
Translation - English
Although many of these findings were excavated as early as the 1930s, they were not acknowledged by the academic world until almost 50 years later. European prehistoric studies widely accepted the approach that Neanderthals were the only species of man that lived during the Middle Paleolithic era, therefore concluding that modern man first appeared approximately 40,000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic era. But the findings uncovered in the Land of Israel prove that early modern man preceded the Neanderthals in the region. Mousterian culture displayed many similarities between the material cultures of the two species which were even identical at times. This led some researchers to conclude that the two species of man existed at the same time. Both societies used similar chiseling techniques to create stone tools and buried their dead in similar ways, while offering similar sacrifices. Other researchers who examined the skeletons discovered in Israel found that the local Homo sapiens had several characteristics that are often considered Neanderthal, including thick skeletons. None of the Neanderthal skeletons, on the other hand, showed the full set of morphological characteristics found in Neanderthal skeletons from Europe.
