Source text - Slovak Regióny Spiša a Šariša zažívali v 16. a 17. storočí významný kultúrny rozmach. Mestá ako Levoča, Kežmarok, Spišské Podhradie či Ľubica patrili k slobodným kráľovským mestám a vyznačovali sa vysokou úrovňou samosprávy. Spiš patril ku geograficky kľúčovým oblastiam, pretože sa tu križovali významné obchodné cesty spájajúce Ukrajinu a Rusko so západnou Európou a Malú Áziu a Balkán s pobaltskými krajinami. Bolo tu aj cenné prírodné bohatstvo v podobe lesov a nerastných surovín. Väčšinu spišských miest obývalo prevažne nemecké obyvateľstvo, ktoré sem prichádzalo už od 12. storočia s cieľom znovuosídliť spustošené regióny po tatárskych nájazdoch a zavádzať nové technológie najmä v oblasti baníctva a metalurgie. Spišskí Nemci udržiavali kontakty so starou vlasťou, predovšetkým so Saskom. S tým súvisí aj rýchle šírenie myšlienok reformácie, pretože mnohí mladí muži študovali na nemeckých univerzitách, predovšetkým vo Wittenbergu, kde prednášal Martin Luther i Philipp Melanchton. V r. 1549 prijali východoslovenské mestá Bardejov, Košice, Levoča, Prešov a Sabinov tzv. Confessio Pentapolitana sformulované bardejovským humanistom Leonardom Stöckelom, ktorým sa priklonili k reformácii Martina Luthera. Na konci 16. storočia a v prvej polovici 17. storočia sa politický vývoj v Uhorsku skomplikoval v dôsledku tureckých nájazdov a protihabsburských povstaní Štefana Bocskaya (1604 – 1606) a Gabriela Bethlena (1619 – 1626), ktoré boli súčasťou vtedajších mocenských a náboženských konfliktov v Európe. Dôsledkom vojen boli aj epidémie moru a cholery. Napriek tomu hudobný život v týchto mestách neustal, práve naopak, početnosť hudobných pamiatok nasvedčuje rozmachu hudobnej kultúry v tesnom spojení s hudobnou kultúrou v západnej Európe, najmä v Nemecku.
V mestách na území Slovenska s prevahou nemeckého obyvateľstva existoval model samosprávy a kultúrno-spoločenského života, ktorý bol v podstate zhodný s mestami v Nemecku. Mesto riadila mestská rada na čele so starostom. Tá zároveň volila aj najvýznamnejších kultúrnych činiteľov mesta – farára, rektora školy a kantora. Kantor bol osobou, ktorá spájala školu s kostolom a zodpovedal za väčšinu hudobnej produkcie v meste. Hudba sa v latinských školách vyučovala zvyčajne denne a žiaci účinkovali na bohoslužbách a pri iných slávnostných príležitostiach. Priemerne vzdelaný mešťan tohto obdobia mal okrem latinčiny, poetiky, rétoriky, filozofie, teológie a matematiky výborné teoretické a praktické vedomosti aj v hudbe. Vysokú úroveň hudobnej produkcie dokladajú pomerne rozsiahle primárne a sekundárne pramene v podobe notových pamiatok a dobových inventárnych súpisov hudobnín a hudobných nástrojov. Najvýznamnejšou pamiatkou spišského regiónu je Levočská zbierka hudobnín, ktorá je súčasťou rozsiahlej historickej Levočskej ev. a. v. cirkevnej knižnice. Knižnica pravdepodobne vznikla počas reformácie pri mestskej latinskej škole. V roku 1838 bol premiestnená na chór evanjelického kostola a. v., kde sa nachádza aj dnes. O terajší rozsah a usporiadanie knižnice sa na konci 19. storočia významne zaslúžil Ľudovít Weszter, ktorý v roku 1880 prevzal funkciu knihovníka. Prostredníctvom zberateľskej činnosti a aktívnym vyhľadávaním starých kníh v Levoči a v okolitých obciach rozšíril počet kníh na 16 000. Hudobniny levočskej evanjelickej a. v. cirkevnej knižnice tvoria samostatnú časť, medzi hudobnými historikmi známu pod názvom Levočská zbierka hudobnín (LZH). Zo 16. a 17. storočia sa tu zachovalo spolu 60 knižničných jednotiek, z čoho je 31 tlačí a 29 rukopisov. V repertoári tlačí prevažujú nemecké, prípadne sliezske tlače, a repertoár tlačených i rukopisných pamiatok je výrazne orientovaný na nemeckých a sliezskych skladateľov evanjelickej cirkevnej hudby: S. Scheidt, A. Hammerschmidt, H. Schütz, H. Praetorius, M. A. von Löwenstern a ďalší. Sú tu však zastúpení aj talianski skladatelia, napr. Rigatti či Rovetta, a v repertoári LZH nechýbajú aj pamiatky so svetskou alebo inštrumentálnou hudbou. Menší, avšak nezanedbateľný podiel majú aj domáci skladatelia ako J. Šimbracký (Schimbrack), S. Marckfelner alebo S. Capricornus, skôr ojedinele sa tu nachádzajú aj diela francúzskych autorov. Z bohatého repertoára LZH sme si pre našu edíciu vybrali jednu skladbu z diela Musicalische Seelenlust (1634) od nemeckého skladateľa Tobiasa Michaela.
Translation - English The regions of Spiš and Šariš experienced a significant cultural boom in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Towns like Levoča, Kežmarok, Spišské Podhradie and Ľubica were free royal towns, characterized by a high level of self-government. In terms of geography, Spiš belonged to key areas since important business routes crossed here, connecting Ukraine and Russia to Western Europe, and Asia Minor and the Balkan to Baltic areas. It also had valuable natural resources in the form of forests and mineral resources. The majority of towns in Spiš was inhabited by German population which had been arriving here ever since the twelfth century with the aim of repopulating the regions deserted after the Tatar raids, and introducing new technologies, mainly in the field of mining and metallurgy. The Germans of Spiš maintained contacts with their old motherland, mainly with Saxony. The rapid spread of the ideas of the Reformation is also connected to this fact, since several young men studied in universities in Germany, mainly in Wittenberg where Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchton were lecturing. Bardejov, Košice, Levoča, Prešov and Sabinov, towns in Eastern Slovakia, adopted in 1549 the so-called Confessio Pentapolitana formulated by Leonard Stöckel, Humanist from Bardejov, and by this they inclined to the Reformation of Martin Luther. In the end of the sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century, the political developments in Hungary were complicated by the Turkish raids and the anti-Habsburg uprisings of Stephen Bocskay (1604 – 1606) and Gabriel Bethlen (1619 – 1626), which were part of the conflicts of power and religion in Europe. The wars resulted in epidemics of plague and cholera as well. However, musical life did not halt in these towns; on the contrary, the number of musical relics points to the boom of music culture in close connection with the music culture in Western Europe, mainly in Germany.
In towns with a majority of German population in the territory of Slovakia, a model of self-government and cultural-social life existed, which was basically identical to that of towns in Germany. The town was directed by the municipal council, with the mayor at its head. This, at the same time, elected the most important cultural figures of the town – the parish priest, the rector of the school, and the cantor. The cantor was the person who connected the school with the church, and who was responsible for the majority of music production in the town. Music in the Latin schools was usually taught daily, and the students participated in the service and other festive occasions. Besides Latin, poetics, rhetoric, philosophy, theology and mathematics, a citizen of an average education in that era had an excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of music. The high standard of music production is documented by the relatively large number of primary and secondary sources in the form of music and contemporaneous inventory registers of music and musical instruments. The most significant musical relic of the region of Spiš is the Levoča Music Collection, which is part of the vast historic Ev. a. v. church library in Levoča. The library was probably founded at the municipal Latin school during the Reformation. In 1838, it was relocated to the choir of the Evangelical Church a. v., where it can be found even today. The present extent and organization of the library is the work of Ľudovít Weszter in the end of the nineteenth century, who took over the post of librarian in 1880. By his collecting activities and active search for old books in Levoča and nearby villages, he extended the number of books to sixteen thousand. The music collection of the Levoča Evangelical a. v. church library forms a separate unit, known among music historians under the name Levoča Music Collection (LMC). A total of sixty volumes have been preserved here from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, consisting of thirty-one prints and twenty-nine manuscripts. The repertoire of the prints is dominated by German or, at the most, Silesian prints, and the repertoire of both the prints and the manuscripts is strongly oriented towards German and Silesian composers of Lutheran church music: S. Scheidt, A. Hammerschmidt, H. Schütz, H. Praetorius, M. A. von Löwenstern and others. However, Italian composers are also represented here, e.g. Rigatti and Rovetta, and the repertoire of the LMC contains even relics of secular and instrumental music. A smaller, though not negligible portion belongs to domestic composers like J. Šimbracký (Schimbrack), S. Marckfelner and S. Capricornus. The occurrence of the works of French authors here is rather special. From the rich repertoire of the LMC, we have chosen for this edition a piece from the composition Musicalische Seelenlust (1634) by the German composer Tobias Michael.
