although there are lost of cheap flights from london and liverpool, we're heading into belfast by car from the republic of ireland. because northern ireland has been in headlines around the world for its struggles and troubles the past few decades, we're a little nervous about what to expect. and entering from the republic, southern ireland...one of the rival arms of the friction here....we're not what to expect as far as a border crossing. the owners at our b&b in westport say they make the drive frequently and it is very safe and easy driving....so we're on our way.
CARRIE:
the drive is beautiful...as all drives in ireland are...misty mountains surrounded by green fields... narrow winding roads lined with stone walls. we packed a picnic lunch for the car so we can limit our stops.. you always want to make a short drive for kids. so we chow cheese sandwiches and watch the scenery go by...
JEREMY:
like other divided cities emerging from decades of struggle, belfast is on the move. there is a high-energy about the place and tourists are greeted like old friends. but it wasn't always that way...belfast started out in conflict, the first settlement here was actually destroyed. the first english settlers arrived in the early 17th century along with french protestants fleeing persecution in france but the catholics and protestants here were on friendly terms back then, actually uniting to push for increased independence from england...the friction between these two groups would develop later. in the late 19th century, belfast grew in big part because of the industrial revolution...huge factories and shipyards brought thousands of workers and in fact by the start of wwii belfast had a population of almost 1/2 million people. after the southern half of the island achieved independence from england, belfast became the capital of northern ireland. today almost 300,000 people call belfast home and the peace process has brought about an economic boom.

it was the late 60s when the catholic and protestant line was drawn...up until that time, although catholics were in the majority in many places, the protestants received a majority of the representation in government due to unfair voting practices and were privy to most of the government jobs including the police force which caused major friction... at one point the force was less than 10% catholic even though catholics in some areas made up almost 1/2 the population. during this time, anti-catholic statements like cromwell's tirades against the church, were met with favor by many protestants. in 1969, a civil rights group protesting these and other injustices marched from belfast to derry where the police just watched on as a violent mob created havoc for the marchers. it was then that the troubles, as these times are known, began. Because peaceful protest was not working, the irish republic army, which had been silent for decades, and they made a come back, the northern ireland parliament was abolished and british troops were sent in to maintain peace. but the troops held a heavy hand against the catholics...in 1972 the british troops killed 13 innocent civilians in an act that is known as bloody sunday. an act that brought the iras campaign of violence to mainland england and escelated the troubles. in retaliation to the ira violence, extreme protestant leaders like ian paisley took the reigns of power and armed groups like the ulster volunteer force sprang up...each act of violence was then met with an equally or more atrocious act escalating the troubles. the 1980s saw the peak of violence in the northern ireland...catholics railed against imprisonment without trial of suspected ira members...you can see the old jail and courthouse which were connected via underground tunnel to maintain secrecy.

though the peace line wall still stands separating the catholic and protestant neighborhoods in fear of a reprisal of violence, the sentiments on the wall show the turn of tide of the emotional state of the people wanting a peaceful end for generations to come.

if we had more time in northern ireland, there is lots more to explore...just north of here...counties derry and antrim host some of the most spectacular scenery in ireland...giant's causeway where over 30,000 huge blocks of basalt rock tumble along the coast like playthings of some invisible giant, and the city of derry whose 17th century walls still enclose the old town which is alive with a vibrant music scene. but we have limited time, so today we are going to head just outside belfast's center to the museum of transportation.
JEREMY:
crossing ireland by rail gave us a good look at the countryside and brought us to killarney and the west coast where traditional music sessions happen spontaneously and often and irish is still the primary language in many households. the west coast also offered perspective on the root of the troubles with visits to ancient castles like blarney and ross castle that were taken by oliver cromwell's english forces during the mid 17th century.
JEREMY:
heading north on ireland's west coast we discovered many of ireland's natural treasures in the burren at the cliffs of moher and ailwee caves.....(music pause) and the beautiful drive through the connemara to county mayo where carrie got to discover a bit of her own family history in the many o'malley castles that dot the coast of clew bay.
CARRIE:
the trip to the south definitely gave us insight into the long course of the struggles here in ireland and after almost 100 years of tension, first when southern ireland had its war of independence with england, and then during the troubles when the status of northern ireland was fought for bitterly among countrymen, this moment ushers in a new era of peace and prosperity for this flourishing country and i can't wait to return to explore more of the area's countryside and see what happens next.

So it turns out they found this fossil of this mammal. It’s like 50‑million years old and it was actually the biggest mammal to ever walk the Earth. It’s three times the size of an elephant, and they made this big replica of it. So they wanted me to re‑create it out of cake for the opening of the exhibit.

Listen. Don’t, listen. Don’t even start. They pronounce it something like in, "indiradrium", "indrigasterium", "indrogatherium". It’s like a "Indricotherium". That’s what they call it. Indricotherium. Look at the detail on this thing. We got to really make this thing really big. It’s going to be pretty amazing. You’ll have underneath here cereal treats. This, cereal. The rest will all be cake on top, which is the majority of the cake. In order to achieve this skin, we’re going to use fondant and modeling chocolate together, and we’re going to scratch it and scuff it so that it gets this rough look. So my vision was seeing this big mammal on top of a cake, with two trees and a little caveman standing next to it. Because I really wanted to show the size proportion of the caveman to the Indricotherium. It was very important to show that. Dinosaur there. Tree there. Tree there. I wanted it to look like a scene right out of the museum. You know, I really want it to feel like in the wild. We had to build some hills and make some dips and valleys. We could cover it in fondant, white fondant, just to keep the structure together.

So once we get the landscape the shape that we want, then we dirty‑ice it and cover it with fondant, which helps keep everything together. Next step, get somebody cutting leaves.
The leaves we’re cutting out of green fondant. And for the trees themselves, we’re doing something a little different.

To get the look of a prehistoric swamp, we started roughing in the cake with green butter cream. And then Remy comes through with the clear, bluish-green piping gel to make the river. While this was all happening, Daniela was finishing a caveman. It’s completely made out of modeling chocolate. And I mean, it came together nice.

Source text - English A new study in Biology Letters has found that warmer temperatures may make lizards smarter, even as past studies have linked a global decline in lizards to climate change.
Looking at Australia's Eastern three-lined skink (Bassiana duperreyi), researchers found that warm temperatures during incubation not only resulted in larger individuals (a result confirmed in previous research) but perhaps more clever ones as well.
To test the lizards' smarts, scientists incubated two sets of lizards: 9 in cold temperatures and 12 in warm. Then the researchers placed the lizards in a plastic container with two exits, one of which was blocked by see-through Plexiglass.
The researchers then frightened the lizard by touching their tails. Those incubated in warmer temperatures learned quicker than the others to avoid the exit blocked by Plexiglass.
"Climate change might not be so bad for these guys," Joshua Amiel, lead author, said in a press release.
However, 2010 study in Science estimated that 20 percent of the world's lizard species could go extinct due directly to climate change impacts. The massive study looked at declines in 34 different lizard groups over five continents. The study found that hot days meant lizards spent more time in the shade and less time foraging, this was particularly bad news for breeding.
"The heat doesn't kill them, they just don't reproduce," co-author Jack Sites, a biology professor at Brigham Young University. "It doesn't take too much of that and the population starts to crash."
People don't often think of lizards as 'smart.' But recent research has shown researchers that lizards may be smarter than expected perhaps even equal to birds. A study last year, also in Biology Letters, found that Puerto Rican anole, a type of lizard, can match birds in intelligence tests. The lizards were capable of solving a problem they've never encountered before, remembering the solution in future trials, and even changing techniques when presented with new challenges.

Now it is time to start the conversation, with the help of the wonderful platform ‘New Tactics for Human Rights’.
This week we are inviting 11 experts from all over the world, from different projects promoting openness, collaboration and transparency, to answer your questions, comment on interesting topics and discuss the future of technology in promoting transparency. [...]
